Some pages won't display properly

I have IE6 on an XP SP3 machine.

What might cause some few web pages to display improperly (i.e. some of the
first items on the page are displayed in a wide band across the screen,
forcing a scroll down to the rest of the page)?

These pages display perfectly normally on other PCs, with no need to scroll
in order to see the entire page.

This effect is not consistent with all web pages, but only seems to affect a
few web pages.

Screen resolution? Text size?

Post an example of a publicly accessible URL which demonstrates your
symptom if you need more help.

That page is certainly not designed with accessibility in mind.
E.g. try changing Options, Accessibility to Ignore font sizes and then set
View, Text Size, Largest. Is that the sort of problem you are seeing?

Is
there any way for me to post an IMAGE of my screen so that you can see
exactly what I mean?

Most users upload a screenshot to a web server and post a link to it.

Those adjustments had no effect. The horizontal menu across the top of
www.howstuffworks.com is still displaying vertically. Other items on the
page are also out of position vertically.

Another (maybe unrelated) occurance in my browser is happening with
Microsoft Newsgroups: every time that I sign in, my browser indicates that
the next page cannot be displayed - then, when I re-enter the newsgroups from
the beginning, I find that I am now signed in, and everything then operates
normally.
