Ghostly Mouse Problem. Advice needed please.

P

Paul Woodsford

XP Home SP2 running on a P3, 512 SDram PC, ADSL connection via a ADSL Router
modem, using a P2 Wheel mouse that uses MS Intellipoint software.
The mouse started moving on its own making it almost impossible to use.
Am running ZA Pro, AVG, MS Antispyware and S&D.
System clean and no software installed recently.
Cleaned mouse, no change.
Changed mouse for a similar PS mouse that was working OK on another PC, no
change.
Updated software and mouse movement better, usable, but if not in use the
pointer has the shakes.
If I use an older mouse with a large (?? RS232) plug then there are no
problems.
Any advice much appreciated.
NB: Have no free USB ports on this machine.

I suspect that the PS2 port is dirty, has worn out making a loose
connection, or is breaking free from its board mounting. Check that the
mouse connections don't have any bent pins. I once corrected a dirty
PS2 port by brushing alcohol on the pins and repeatedly inserting and
removing the plug. Have the computer powered down when doing this.
