Ghosting / Imaging Vista?

T

Tristan

Hi,

I have a new Dell machine capable of running Vista, but none of the Acronis
9 or Ghost can image the drives or see the new hard drives installed.

Anybody had any success on doing this?

Thanks

Excellent results with Image For Windows, installed on a separate XP drive.

I use Ghost 2003, boot it from a floppy (or bootable cd) and have made
images and disk clones of 98SE, ME, XP Home and Vista 64 bit (RC1).

You say that True Image can not see the new hard drives that are installed on
your Dell. From you post it sounds like you are still running XP so what is
your hardware configuration? True Image 9 works just fine with XP but not
with Vista.

I have been beta testing True Image Home version 10 with Vista and it works
just fine. Version 10 includes a number of new options that would warrant
purchasing the upgrade even if you aren't planning on upgrading to Vista. I
suspect that it will be ready for release about the time that Microsoft rolls
out Vista.

How are you running the imaging programs? Boot floppy or boot CD? What kind
of drives do you have? I.e., IDE, SATA, etc...

Can You give me some input on using Acronis 10 with a duel boot
configuration? I made the mistake of installing acronis 10 to the XP drive in
a duel boot system instead of the vista drive. When I installed it to the
vista drive it won't run. It does run in the XP drive. (am using the trial
version). If I uninstall it from the XP drive and install it on the vista
drive what are the chances that it will work on the vista drive? Any
suggestions will be appreciated.

Can one ghost from one OS with 100% certainty that the other OS being
ghosted will be robust?

For example ghost from XP on Vista drive, ghost from Vista on XP drive?

Just so we are talking about apples and apples which build did you obtain?
The only build of TI 10 that I had found to be Vista compatible is 4864. The
earlier builds worked fine on XP but failed miserably on Vista. If you
obtained the copy from Acronis then I would assume that it is the latest
build, but if you obtained it from somewhere else then you need to get build
4864 before going any further.

I can tell you that Acronis 9.0 installed in XP images and restores both XP
and Vista. I don't use Ghost, Acronis works so well on my machine.

I'm using True Image 10 build 4871. But I think I see my problem. I had true
image installed on my Xp drive and my vista drive. It would'n work on the
vista dive but it would work on my xp drive. I have since uninstalled it from
the vista drive. However, I can backup my vista drive using the program from
the xp drive.

I saw another post here explaining NOT to use the "secure zone" part of the
program. I also had a problem using the "secure zone" applet. After
designating part of another drive as a "secure zone" I was not able to find
or access that part of the drive. I had to use partition magic to reclaim the
unallocated space that "secure zone" had claimed.

Just a caution. Others have reported having problems with Vista partitions
created using Acronis. That may also include the restores. There is a
different version of NTFS used by Vista that Acronis had said they would
support by the RTM.

The secure zone is not visable outside of True Image. When you create the
secure zone you can store your backup images there and when the area is full
it will begin overwriting the older files. You can mount the image and see
or recover any of the files stored there. You can also remove the secure
zone using True Image so I don't know what could have happened to cause you
to have to use partition magic to recover the area. I have not experienced
any problem with the secure zone on XP or Vista. You just have to make sure
that you create the zone on a different drive than your boot drive because if
drive C crashes then so has all of your backups. There are some limitations
with the secure zone but those are being addressed and should be changed on
later releases. I am not sure where you got build 4871 because I thought I
had the latest version with 4864 since it has only been released for a couple
of weeks.

I checked on the Acronis site and found that there is a problem with the Dell
proprietary partition (diagnostic tools area) and true image. It currently
does not support it so perhaps it would be best to avoid the software
completely on your Dell.

The question of how to backup ALL sectors on a drive has been asked many
times in the Acronis
forums with respect to TI 9. IMNSHO, the response has been unsatisfactory.
Perha[s the recently released TI 10 does better?

Use a product like Shadow Protect that has an option to image ALL sectors.
