Ghost and Vista

Roger Drouin

Hi!

I'm about to install Vista.
I want to make sure that this process will work.
So, I would want you to check if it is correct.

Here is the process:

1. Ghost (version 10.0) my C: drive (Windows XP) to an image on DVD
2. install Vista on the C: drive
3. use and test Vista
4. Ghost (after restarting in DOS mode with a boot diskette) the C: drive
(now with Windows Vista installed on) to an image on DVD
5. restore with Ghost to C: drive the Windows XP image coming from DVD
6. restart with Windows XP now on C: drive

later, to continue to use and test Vista:

7.Ghost (version 10.0) my C: drive (Windows XP) to an image on DVD
8. restore with Ghost (after restarting in DOS mode with a boot diskette)
to C: drive the Windows Vista image coming from DVD
9. use and test Vista
10. repeat steps 4, 5 and 6 to return to Windows XP

Do you thing this process will work correctly?

Thanks a lot! Roger

Yes it will work
I use Ghost regularly and only had problems with earlier versions of it not
supporting sata drives
I now have no problems
I did drive drive image 2002 with a very early release of Longhorn and the
imaging software could not find the ghost image store on the second drive
this also seems to have been fixed

Are we talking about Norton Ghost?
I've never had success with this product.
Anytime I went to restore a partition from the image,
Ghost was unable to locate the image.

You won't be able to fit Vista on a DVD not to mention it may be tough to
get WinXP on a DVD.. Depending on what all you have installed. A better
option would be to keep the image on another partion of your harddrive,
assuming that you have something like a 120GB that is partitoned into 3-5
partitions.

Other thing to consider is the file structure system. What do you use for
WinXP? It can be FAT32 or NTFS. Windows Vista must be NTFS. Take that
into consideration.

Why would ghost not be able to find the image? Just trying to understand.
I use ghost for years, however, I've been using Acronis True Image lately.
My Vista Image is stored on a partition, but I've never tried to restore it
yet.

I use Ghost10 and did just fine fitting Vista on a single DVD. (Especially
if you have a DL dvd burner...) Just have to use compression and a straight
install will fit just fine.

I used Norton Ghost 2003 for DOS, kept their images on another HD
drive/partition (have two NTFS [C: too] and one FAT32), and had no problems.
