ghost and Compaq pc

I have made a ghost image from my compaq pc when i restore the image xp just hangs during startup. Originally the compaq machine has a restore image located in a fat16 partition which i have removed can anyone help me cure the problem ? I do not think i need the fat16 partition because when i try to enter the restore environment by pressing F10 is does nothing just ignores the request

Sorry, you've messed up. By removing the Compaq partition, you've
removed all the necessary instructions that the Restore is looking for.
Either call Compaq tech support for a way out, or now you'll have to do
a truly clean install of Windows with a real XP disk.
