Getting Win2k and WinME to talk

K

Hi,

I've got two machine - one Win 2k and the either Win ME. I'd like
each machine to map a drive to the other machine. For example, G:
becomes the C: drive on the other machine, in both cases.

Both machines are set to the workgroup of "Workgroup", and both
machines have their drives shared.

I just cannot map the drives. I do not know what I am doing wrong.
The two machines are connected through a router.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kris

C: Drive is reserved for the first partition in the first drive - XP has
a utility to change drive letters, but I don't think it will let you
change the C: drive. I'm not sure about 2K and I'm fairly sure that Me
probably doesn't have any capability to change existing drive letters,
so if you want to map an external drive you will have to pick a letter
that isn't used.
1. Have you named the shares with a name that doesn't end in $? In 2K
the default share for a drive is C$ for the C: drive. You need to click
on New share and give the share either C or some other name.
2. Is File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks enabled in the
Connection Properties?
3. Once those are done, you should be able to see the drives in the
other computer. Then in Explorer, under Tools select Map Network Drive
and map the foreign drive to a letter on the local computer.

You have enabled a user account on the W2K machine and given permission to
that account on the shares, and log into both machines with the same user
acount and password?
