I have a new toolbar on my web browser which i did't put there myself and my
antivirus program picks it up as being a virus called the elite bar. It stops
me from using search engines or any other means of seraching the web and i
don't know how to delete it.

Ajod,

* click 'Start' > Settings > Control Panel > ADD or Remove Programs >
Uninstall any programs you don't need. 'elite bar' probably installed
several other programs that will be in your Add Remove Programs list. Also,
read the uninstall instructions very carefully

Before rebooting

* click 'Start' > Run > type msconfig , click OK > click into the 'Startup'
tab,
uncheck anything that doesn't need to startup when you boot your computer,
specifically anything associated with the 'elite bar' > click OK > reboot

* Download & use any of several Spyware removers, such as Ad-aware

Mind you, the Elite Toolbar can be tricky to remove. So you may want to repost to the group microsoft.public.security.virus

I'd try this: Do a search on your system for files with names that begin with "elite"
Rename those to xxxold
Then take a look at Internet Explorer, Tools, Options, On the General Tab
look at 2nd block, "Temporary Internet Files"
press Settings
Next screen, press View Objects

Carefully review the next screen displayed, which includes the browser helper objects.
Look for something with name Elite. If found, remove it.

I'd urge you to insure your antivirus is up-to-date, and run it in Safe Mode of Windows. (Press F8 when pc is booting up, select Safe Mode.)
