getting past windows xp login

After shutting down the pc when backing up an external hd, I rebooted the
sytem and when I selected the login name it rebooted. I can go into safe mode
but admin and anyuser name still, in regular mode, causes a reboot of the
sytem and this is all automatic.
In safemode the selections can be made but normal mode a reboot is
automatic. What did I do?

I'm not sure what you did, but if you can log into admin via safe mode, you
might want to create new user profiles and then copy all of the data from the
old profiles to the new profiles. Hopefully the new profiles will work
correctly.

Addition to my previous post: I should say that I suggest that you test the
new profiles before you add/copy any data to them. Also, you might want to
back up any data from that drive as soon as possible.
