Help me login to Windows XP

I was reading some forums and someone posted this information which
supposedly lets you automatically login to windows without typing your
password:
"Start>run> regedit . HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> Software>Microsoft>Windows NT>
Current Version> Winlogon

Add a string value called AutoAdminLogon. Make the value 1
Add a string value called DefaultUserName. Make it Administrator or the name
of your admin account.
Add a string value called DefaultPassword. Type the password to the account
in here."
I did all of this in regedit and rebooted, and now it is stuck in a loop
logging on and off, on and off. The same loop happens when I try to boot in
safe mode. One thing to note which could be an issue: my password was blank
to begin with, so I left DefaultPassword with a blank value. Please help me
login.

Try holding down the shift key.

Log in using the built-in Administrator account instead of your own account. If
you are using Windows XP Home you'll need to boot to Safe Mode to do this. You
may need to press Control-alt-delete at the login prompt in order to get a
dialog box you can type the username into.

there is only one account on my computer, it is named Erik, and it is THE
ONLY administrator account, which I used when I entered as DefaultUserName
"Erik"

When Windows XP is installed it creates a hidden account named Administrator.
This is built into Windows XP and cannot be deleted. It can be renamed, and it
can be broken - but hopefully it will still be available. The password, unless
changed, is empty.

To log into the Administrator account you need to get a login dialog that allows
you to type a username. In Windows XP Home you need to be in Safe Mode. In
Professional you can get to the login dialog by pressing control-alt-delete at
the login screen.

I held shift and got the login dialog, then entered Administrator and hit
OK. It accepted the login info, but still immediately logged back out and
repeated the login/logout loop. What now? ...I was planning on installing an
extra hard drive and installing Win98 on it anyway... would I be able to
access the current drive through the new one (with Win98) so I could back up
my data? Also, you should know that my current hdd is partitioned into 3
drives, one with only system data on it. Should I just reinstall XP on that
partition?
