Getting IE to recognize Sun's Java

Having read that Microsoft is expecting migration from its JVM to Sun's, I decided to make the change at this point.
First I removed the Microsoft JVM using Microsoft's tool. There's a way to check whether it has been removed completely, and I found that it was.
Then I installed Sun's JVM 1.4, the latest. It works, in the sense that I can trial the programs that show up on a desktop icon during the installation.
I suspect the problem is the IE plug-in.
Reason being, when I went to divx.com, I had a message asking to download and install the Microsoft JVM.
I know that some sites are specific to the Microsoft JVM, so I went to the Sun site and tried to use their plug-in tester page:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.jsp

I had the same request show up about downloading the Microsoft JVM.
The same page includes 3 different ways to test and be sure that the plug-in has been installed correctly and all the settings are correct. No problems with any of them. It should be working.

Does anyone know of anything I should do aside from accepting a reinstall of the Microsoft JVM? (I'm not even sure that would happen, but I suppose I could agree and find out.)
Thank you.

Do you have Java selected in IE? In IE, tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, scroll
down to Java (Sun). You should also have selected "JIT compiler for virtual machine
enabled." Nothing else is necessary.

No reference to JIT compiler under Java (Sun).
The only choice available, which is checked, is Use [version] for<applet> (requires restart).
I can't find a reference to JIT compiler anywhere on the Advanced tab. Is it somewhere else?
Thanks for your help.

I have made some progress.
When I go to the Java test website, the Microsoft Downloads (Other) message comes up, offering to download the Microsoft JVM. If I push No the test fails. If I push Yes, a separate Window opens, telling me I can't download the Microsoft JVM. However, Java starts to work on the original page.
For some reason, whatever blocks Java is released.
