I have 2 old computers win95 and win98 and I want to get some files off them.

Can I just put their hard drives in a winXP computer (as an additional
drive) and copy them across. The XP computer has a NTFS partition and I
assume the 95\98 computers have FAT\FAT32 partitions....is that still OK?

Thanks 4 any advice

I suppose 'slaving' the older drives woudl be the easiest way of
transferring the files to the XP machine. The file system doesn't make any
difference you can transfer FAT/FAT32 files to the NTFS partition

Get cheap PATA -> USB adapter. (sold on eBay)
that way you don't have to play with BIOS, jumpers, etc.

That will work. If the drive(s) were boot drives with primary partitions,
all the primary partitions will be listed first. This will change the drive
letter designations in XP and may invalidate your shortcuts.

So the best strategy would be to get the files off as quickly as possible.

The drives don't have to be 'in' the XP computer.
You just need to connect a power and IDE cable.
Sometimes, it is easiest to disconnect the CD drive and use that cable.
Using the CD cable, you don't have to worry about cable select or
master/slave.

In theory, yes, it should work.
