Getting 0x80040706 error while insatlling software on XP

I'm trying to install some software - it has setup.exe version
12.0.0.58849, but I get error
Unhandled exception, Error Number 0x80040706, Description: Object
Reference Not Set.
On this page

is some solution , but only to version 11.

What software are you trying to install? That information may be
more meaningful that an installshield error message.

The software is Ulead DVD Movie Factory 6 Plus. But I think something
is wrong in Windows XP itselt. I tried to install latest graphic
driver (setup.exe ver. 11.0.0.28844) and the same error. Even after
repairing InstallShield as recommended. Actually - now I cannot
install anynything. All ends with 0x80040706 error.

Sorry for the long pause, I recap whole situation
- I cannot install 90% of applications, which go through setup.exe
(InstallShield), I always get 0x80040706, "Object refence not set"
error. It's not only Ulead apllication problem, I cannot update Ati
Radeon driver, etc...
- I deleted whole InstallShiled directory and tried to install iKrenel
engine update as recommended there

"Interface is not registered" error.

I'm stuck, but I want do all things possible before reinstalling whole
windows.

I have the same problem, and I find the same answers... nothing works...
I think it might be a problem with some Temp files, but I can't delete
that!!
always appear a message that says something like: you can't delete
these files, there is another program using it.
how can I delete this files? their extension is .DAT

I encountered this. It seemed that this was due to a XP corruption
caused by a Norton Internet Security 2009 (initially cause by Norton's
own on-line support agent.) I needed to remove NIS and revert IE /
WMP back to their "delivered" version (IE 6 and WMP 9.) A repair
reinstall fixed this for me.
