Get USB to work in 'pseudo XPHome?

Rosie

I have a Mitac 8555 notebook with a USB 2.0 external floppy drive. I
don't know if this is classed as a suitable subject for this group but
I'm trying to produce a rescue disk should I pick up a virus. Trouble
is, the USB floppy won't work in 'pseudo' XPHome so I have 5 floppies
created in XP (Panda Platinum Security) but they're no use as they won't
boot.
Is there a way to make USB work in pre XP mode? Failing that, I'm also
trying to create a rescue CD (in this case, XPHome+SP2 slipstreamed +
Panda rescue files) but that won't boot either - I get a 'non-emulation
booting' message. So, I'm strapped!
Any ideas please?

If you have Roxio Easy CD Creator 6 or above, you can make a bootable CD for
all os/es from the image of a Bootable Floppy. So if you make a bootable
floppy, but have no bootable floppy drive due to USB, you can make a bootable
CD from the floppy.

Well, I don't have Roxio but I do have Nero 6, but I couldn't work out
how to do it! Doh!
I was working on that theory though. So it looks like there are no
suitable USB drivers to make my floppy work, right?
Thanks.

Whether it will boot from a USB floppy or not is a function of the bios, so
you might need to check with the manufacturer to see of it's possible.

You're probably better off making a bootable CD. Do a search for BartPE;
that should do what you need.

I've been checking with Mio (Mitac) but their website is crap and I
would be most reluctant to do a flash without being 100% sure it was
right!

I have got that but don't I need to make a bootable, slipstreamed XPHome
+SP2 first in order to add the Panda files in BartPE? As I said, the
slipstream disc won't boot because of a non-emulation boot message.
Therefore I can't go any further with BartPE.
Unless I'm doing something wrong?
Presumably there are no 'pre-XP drivers I can load?
Thanks.

No, you just need some version of XP. It's not going to matter if it's the
same as what's installed on your system if all you want is the ability to
run an updated AV program. And really, unless your anticipated virus problem
is crippling, you should be able to run the AV program from within Windows
anyway.

It sure sounds like it. You create the BartPE disc from within Windows, so I
don't know why you're trying to boot from a Windows CD. And as I said, for
what you want to do, you don't need a slipstreamed CD.

Drivers function within an OS, so you've have to be booted and running in
order for drivers to load. Whether a device can be used to boot or not is a
function of the BIOS. If it supports booting from a particular device -- CD,
floppy, USB, network, whatever, then all you'd need are the proper files on
the device, you don't need any drivers. If your motherboard doesn't support
booting from USB, there's no software that will fix that.

As far as flashing the bios, you're right to be cautious.

I hadn't thought of that, I wouldn't have known how to get anything
other than what's on my original disks.
In the meantime I've created a slipstreamed XP+SP2 anyway and it does
boot, so you're suggestion worked!

I did one so I knew how to do it and also for when I need to re-instal.
I realise it is over the top just to be able to run a'DOS' anti-virus
but being able to do a clean boot to run a virus check sounds a good
idea?

I can't find out whether there is an update, and if so, what it does so
I'll keep looking.
I still need to add an anti-virus to the boot disk, I guess it doesn't
have to be Panda.
Many thanks for taking the time to explain this to me, much appreciated.
I'll delve deeper into BartPE to work out how to do it.
Regards.

If you're running a DOS AV program and you're formatted with NTFS, it's not
going to work anyway.

BartPE supports Stinger.

I've found it handy on several occasions. The Windows command console is
fine for something, but BartPE's file manager is easier to navigate.

Actually, I mislead you there. I did make the slipstream and it worked
but I then made a BartPE which also worked. So far, so good.
If you're running a DOS AV program and you're formatted with NTFS, it's not
going to work anyway.
Is AVG 7 free a DOS program, only I've read in the forums that there is
an AVG 7 plugin almost ready to use in BartPE
BartPE supports Stinger.
Yup, I've just made another disk using Stinger and that works also, so
if I can get the AVG plugin shortly I'll be where I want to be! I'll add
some more plugins, now I'm getting the hang of it (I wish)!
I've found it handy on several occasions. The Windows command console is
fine for something, but BartPE's file manager is easier to navigate.

BartPE is more 'belt and braces' and being able to customise is great.
Thanks again for your patience!
Regards.
