Can not find USB

I got a laptop with xphome from somebody else. When I put a memory stick in
a USB port nothing happens and XP does not show the Removable Mass Storage
device in Explorer or My Computer as usual. However the USB port is working
correctly. I can get to it through the DOS interface and System Information,
Norton etc. see it . Also the drivers are OK and Sys Info tells me that the
device is working correctly.
Maybe some setting that I can not find?
Thanks for your help.

You did not state what type of "memory stick" you are connecting to the USB
port. If it is similar to a thumb drive it has an on/off button and it has
a battery.
Turn the stick on you'll hear a chime and it will show in Windows Explorer,
etc.

No on/off switch or battery. Works "as is" in other machines. Must be an xp
setting or problem as the drive is also recognised by Windows Commander. Any
idea?
