Get Rid of Login Screen??

J

jimbo

I installed some printer software and now when I boot up I get a
"login screen" with an invitation "To begin, click your user name."

I am the only user and I want to get rid of this stupid "login screen".

Thanks for any help.

The printer software may have required you to install
Microsoft's .NET Framework 1.1. If that's the case you can go
to the Windows Update site, download the update for the
Framework and it will resolve the logon issue. Here's a direct
link to the update:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en

If this doesn't apply to your situation, do the following:

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In the "Users for this computer" box, click on the account you
want to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck

Thanks for the help. There was a user named ASP.NET .. in addition to
"Guest" and me. I have no idea who/what ASP.NET user is.

Anyway, I used "control passwords2" as you suggested and now there is
no more "login screen".

Thanks, jimbo

Jimbo,

Glad to hear you were able to get back to logging on
automatically.

FYI, that ASP.NET account comes along for the ride when you
install the .NET Framework. Take a look in Control Panel ->
Add/Remove programs. You should see an entry for Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1. It was probably installed along with your
printer software.

If you're curious, here's an article with more info about that
account:

Thanks again for your help.

Yes, there is a Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 listed in Control Panel >
Add/Remove Programs.

But, from your reference "What is the ASP.NET Machine Account?", I can
see no reason why I would need it. I don't have a web server nor do I
build any web server applications. Is there any reason why I shouldn't
just uninstall it?

Thanks, jimbo

You can safely delete the account.
