Get Error 0x80072EFD when trying to do windows updates

This error is suppose to have something to do with proxy settings. I don't
use proxy to connect to the internet. I have a new laptop that I just set my
internet up on. The instructions for setting up my DSL are for windows98.
They never published a new set. In any case, I remember going to Internet
Explorer and opening the connection tab so I could tell it never to use a
dial-up. But there wasn't a Lans Setting area. I clicked on the wizard button
and in a moment it said my connection was ready to go. I still couldn't get
onto the internet. I went back to that panel. There was a lans setting area
now. I saw that proxy was checked and there were entries. I thought that's
not right. I unchecked use proxy and I was able to connect. But now I find I
can't get windows updates. There are still numbers in the boxes even though
they are grayed out because I unchecked use proxy (or whatever it was
called). Could those numbers still be having an effect even though I
unchecked proxy? Is there somewhere else I need to check or something I need
to do to get ride of the proxy stuff the wizard created? When I go home
tonight, I'll try deleting all those number in the proxy boxes. I would have
done it yesterday, but I wanted to sure it was okay to remove them.
