Hello,
KB905474 can be removed. Then system can be setup not to install KB905474
and Microsoft Update Site can be informed not to install this update.
This is "Windows Genuine Advantage Notify".
In registry "WGANotify" Registry folder can be exported to another folder
"anywhere and any name", for safe keeping, and then delete from the registry.
Using Start -Search "include all hidden files and folders" find other files
that are "WGANotify" and "Notify" with "WGA" in their name a log file, a cab
file, a txt file and WGATray.exe.
These can all be copied to the folder with the exported registry folder and
original files deleted. Reboot. Check "Add and Remove Programs" to see if
KB905474" has been removed.
Do not use Autoupdate. Turn this off in "Services" disable and stop. Set
B.I.T.S. on manual and stop. If a two way firewall turn off WGA and Generic
Host Process "if listed". These are turned back on when going to the MS
Update Site. Change "Auto Update and B.I.T.S." to "Auto and Start" only when
ready to use the Microsoft Update Site. Change back when update completed.
When using the Microsoft Update Site click on the "Custom" link.
The first time KB905474 will be offered "uncheck the box" and the update
site will place it in the "do not install this critical update" category.
I followed this and have no callouts, no popups from Microsoft and I can
download all critical updates and any freeware that Microsoft offers to those
with what Microsoft considers a legal OS.
From my understanding Microsoft offered "WGANotify" as a option.
Do not know what Microsoft is doing to "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation
Tool" KB892130, this is needed to be accepted on the auto update site and
download updates.
take care.
beamish.
