Trying to download some files off MS site. Genuine advantage fails with
this error: "This version of windows genuine advantage validation tool
is no longer supported..." yada, yada. I just downloaded the file.
What gives?

I have the same trouble.
Tried to follow the below mentioned hint- but the Windows Genuine Advantage
Tool was not occurring in that list.

Is there any other way to download it?

Thanks
Matt

Did you disable your AV's auto scan before attempting to install it?

Before installing *anything* disable the auto scan, just be sure you aren't
installing a trojan or something ;-) That way your AV, Norton or otherwise,
won't be checking every file that is being installed and be a possible cause
for a corrupt installation.

Nah-ah. I'm staying out of this. ... Now, here's my opinion.

And how do you make sure of that beforehand?

If the installer uses a Installshield (non-ms type) .cab file, or an ms
..msi file to unpack and install from, how then does one scan their
contents beforehand so one can install safely afterwards with the
on-access anti-virus scanner in pause-mode?

One doesn't. If you don't know what you're downloading, you shouldn't be
downloading it.

How does one *know* what is being downloaded? e.g. m$ claims that
the windows geniune check will/must be downloaded....but is it &
where is the proof that it is what is claimed before downloading
the spyware?

You're downloading it from MS's servers, of course. Note, I said "install",
not download, should be the time to disable your AV. If you have any doubts,
check the download with your AV before installing it.
