Generic Volume Driver not working/recognized

D

Disturbed

I have a Western Digital My Book external USB drive and also a USB card
reader. Both have been running for months on my Gateway CX210X notebook
under VISTA. Suddenly neither work anymore. When I plug them in, they try to
install and I get a window entitled "Found New Hardware Unknown Device". The
message states:

" Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error
while attempting to install it.

Generic Volume

The system can not find the file specified. If you know the manufacturer of
your device, you can visit its website and check the support section for
driver software."

Never before did I ever need to install any drivers other than the generic
drivers provided by windows to make these devices run.

I have tried to install drivers from my windows\system32 folder and its
subfolders, but that does not seem to work.

Does anybody have any advice?
