When i start my Compaq laptop i get a screen that
says "general protection fault". I tried goping into
safe mode but cannot because windows does not start to
load. Sometimes the message says "exception" instead of
general protection fault. What do i need to do to get the
computer to start?

Hi,

There are a number of GPF in Windows. Please provide the full error
message that you get in identifying the cause.

Hi,

I hope you can provide me with what's written on the black screen with the
white lettering atleast. You would see something like the following:

"<Application Name> caused a General Protection fault in module <module
name> at <address>."

OR

You would also see the following error message:

trap 00000003
debug trap

OR

You would see the following error message:
general protection fault 000000d, tr= 0028, cr0 = 00000011, cr2 =
0000000, cr3 = 0000000, gdt limit = 03ff, base = 0001700, idt limit = 07ff,
base = ... .etc.

FYI: Please be aware that a number of GPF's can occur with respect to
Windows. I would be in a position to help you if you provide the first few
line of what your see.

Meanwhile you could read the following Microsoft KB Article.
