General Newsgroup

What kind of questions are deemed proper for the "General" newsgroup? Many
times when I post here I have various people telling me that I should post on
other groups. How do I know which questions. General seems to imply, well,
General. James

As long as it's Windows-XP-related, it's appropriate here. Realize two
things however:

1. Many people don't realize that application programs like Word and
Excel are *not* part of Windows.

2. Even for applications like Internet Explorer and Outlook Express,
which *are* part of XP, if you post question about these to IE or OE
newsgroups, you will get an audience of people who specialize in those
programs. That's not to say that it's wrong to post such a question
here, but posting in a newsgroup more specific is more likely to get
you the help you need/want.

Post about any issues relating to the XP OS, but not necessarily about
any/all apps that run on it, such as any of the Office applications. They
have their own newsgroups. Also some features such as Outlook Express,
though part of XP, have their own newsgrup, so it's best to post to one of
those.

The bottom line, if there is a specialty newsgroup for that topic post
there, otherwise post here. And again it needs to be an issue about the XP
OS not about any/all things that run on it.

One other point, if a person posts here but there is a better place, and
they get directed there, this should not be taken as an affront or a
chastisement. It's usually just an effort to get the person to the place
they are most likely to get the assistance. If someone knows the answer in
a situation where the question should be posed elsewhere, it's usually given
along with, possibly, advice on where best to post the next time. The whole
point is to get the person the best help and be as efficient as possible.

Don't matter. Posts concern themselves with XP itself, its installed
software that comes with it. Sometimes, MS software that doesn't like MS
Office for instance. 3rd party software like antivirus software, imaging
software, and so forth also abound here to a lesser extent. Other examples
are bios setup, hardware and so forth. You may be redirected or answered
directly. Or, not answered at all.

Personally, I don't care. I won't redirect as its your own choice to search
in other arenas.

To differentiate myself from all the other Daves. Sometimes I want to
search my archived posts and author:daave yields better results than
author:dave.

Actually, I was originally going to be Uncle Grumpy, but that moniker
was already taken.
