General

In your distinguised opinion what does the word "general" mean? When I was in
school I was taught that "general" meant "all encompassing". Has the meaning
changed? What would constitute a general question on this forum? Everytime I
ask a question here I get chastized as if my question is beneath you. If you
had a life you wouldn't be on this forum fielding questions. It seems that it
would be more productive to just answer a question and stop nit picking. Or
would that be too easy for you, in general? James

Hello James

Newsgroups Customer Service would like to apologise if you feel you have not
received the due deference you expected and that the quality of advice was
not up to scratch.
However we are finding some difficulty in tracing the matter to which you
refer, as you addressed your remarks in a new thread as opposed to your
original.
A certain amount of jesting can be expected at times, but ignore them.
Their names can be added to your 'Kill File' and you will not be troubled by
them again.
Stupid/silly questions get asked all the time and I would stress that there
is no reflection on you in this case, as we are not aware of your question.
But not all who help in these groups allow for a poster not bothering to
first do some basic research of their own prior to their posting.
A search on a subject matter via 'find' in any selected group, will bring up
all those who have posted that same stupid/silly question over and over
again. Some do expect this is done prior to posting.
For myself, I have the utmost patience as I was once a poster of
stupid/silly posts.
If you are new to these groups(I must stress these are NOT forums).
then please feel free to use the newusers.group. - a good place for that
stupid/silly question.
This assumption may have been caused by the fact that I think you may have
slipped through from the old clunky discussion group. I may be wrong.
If your question is not so silly and you are fairly cognisant of computer
speak then basic is a good group.
For anything of a general enquiry use the general group.
I would recommend the below as a good read;
I hope that this has assisted you.

Ok, here is the original question. When I open Outlook Express it says there
are no new messages. When I close Outlook Express, it closes and a little box
comes on the screen showing that my mail is now being loaded. How do I
correct this problem? That's pretty general as questions go. You have a lot
of people on here who feel that they are Prima Donnas. If they don't want to
answer questions they should not sign on. If they do not know the answer to a
question they should not reply. Some of them seem to think this is beneath
them and they should really be having lunch with Bill Gates. I agree. At
least that would get them off of here where people who don't know the answer
to all questions could get a civilised answer. Thanks for your attention. By
the way, I have never heard a dumb question. But then I'm not as smart as
they think thet are. (e-mail address removed)

Hello James
Nice to see you have come back.
Newsgroups Customer Service would like to say that we think we have found a
solution to your problem and a possible excuse for the earlier responses,
which alas we have as yet been unable to locate.
The answer is with that word 'general' - of that there is no doubt.
It would appear to us that your problem lies with O.E.
We have no wish to be rude but would like to point out that you have got
your 'generals' mixed up.
We would recommend, and we appreciate that this will cause extra work for
you, but the group windows.outlookexpress.GENERAL was perhaps where you
thought you had posted your thread.
It is an excellant group - you will certainly find a better class of
responder there.
We wish you luck in your search

First, I have no idea who "your" refers to do. Instead of replying to
someone, you've apparently started a new thread. You certainly haven't
quoted anything, so I have no idea who you're responding to.

Second, for someone who's looking for hep, you're certainly not doing a
great job of ingratiating yourself to those who might help you. If you're
looking for help, you might start out by being polite to those who might be
able to help you.

I have no idea what question or questions you may have asked, and that's
just fine with me.

Good luck!

Tools>options>general tab. Is the box marked send and receive messages at
startup checked and do you have a timed "Check for new messages" set up in
there?

I tend to avoid the startup option because I have a number of other things
starting up and it just slows things down, but setting a short period (say
15 minutes) does no harm. To use these options properly you have to check a
box in the tools>accounts>double click account name properties sheet which
is "Include this account when sending and receiving".

If these options are set properly and the problem is not resolved then there
may be a technical problem, but first check these and see how you get on.

As for the answers you get here I saw your question yesterday before leaving
for work but did not have time to answer it. The people who answer questions
here "Generally" do not work for Microsoft and devote their time simply to
help others and sometimes to continue learning themselves. Some people
naturally like to keep on top of things and also to keep learning. Some are
awarded and MVP - it is awarded AFTER they have been helping, not before, so
nobody is committed in any way to Microsoft and in fact nobody feels
particularly obliged to defend Microsoft when we feel they are in error, but
of course constructive criticism is much more effective than just ranting.
Occasionally a Microsoft employee will join in but I suppose like any other
job you really don't want to be taking your work home with you if you sit at
one of these things all day too.

The MVP award does get you the chance to join the Microsoft Developer
Network and from that subscription you get the chance to review and test
various MS platforms, for example a copy of all their OS systems so that you
can test any software on them before releasing it, and therefore you have to
sign a non disclosure agreement and of course the usual anti piracy
agreements, but that in no way equates to being "Employed" as MS tech
support or whatever.

I hope this clarifies the situation for you somewhat regarding the groups
here.

If you feel these groups may be of help in future I suggest you use Outlook
Express to access them because it makes finding information already posted
and sorting out newsgroups names a lot easier for you.
http://www.tames.net/newsgroups.htm may help you out with that. Choosing the
most appropriate group will get you much better / quicker answers because
people tend to "Specialize"
