general computer problems

Meredith

I have XP Professional and all was working ok until recently.
We must have got a Trojan from somewhere.

I have updated AVG Anti vIrus software and run it, Downloaded House Call
Trend and run it. I have AVG Spyware and it scans every day. I d/l Super Anti
Spyware and ran it yesterday. I have also d/l and ran a registry repair type
program called Free Windows Registry Repair. I ran other ones as well. But as
you have to pay quite a bit for them after you get the free d/l I don't wish
to pay for something I am not sure will work.

I cannot get my MS Outlook to open properly. It gives a messages about a
problem and closes down if I dont wish to send a msg to Microsoft. I cannot
receive emails at the moment. In desperation I have gone back to Outlook
Express 6.

I cannot restore to a day other than today's date. I cannot reinstall MS
Small Business Edition 2003. It is missing a file called ZF561407.CAB. so
thats stops the reinstall part way through. I cannot reinstall Business
Contact Manager.

I cannot upgrade XP Professional to a newer version.

I have removed dodgy program files that might have caused the current issues.

I also cannot get a webcam to work. Seems that it wont be captured or the
input is inaccessible. The USB's work with external hard drive and digital
cameras. (the cam could be past its use by date I guess) But not so sure that
is isn't a driver problem.

I am getting quite desperate to resolve this myself. I hate going to the
computer shop when I should be able to fix things myself.

I have been backing up all the important files in case a reformat is
expected. But I really don't want to do that. I find it hard as indifficult
to remember what to do and labourious especially reloading all the programs
and equipment.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Meredith

Free Windows Registry Repair -not a good move. Let's hope it has not
made your situation worse.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hey there,

Thanks for your suggestions and prompt response. I do have Spybot and
started to run it but it stalled and at that time I was running all the other
stuff. Thought I would go back to it later. Which I haven't done yet. But I
will. So ty for the reminder. It is a good program.

I had seen the SP3 and read about it being for the IT people and those with
more than one PC and thought I could just try the smaller updates. But I will
do as you suggested, tho I am not on Broadband here in Australia. It will be
a slower d/l for me I guess. Will start first thing in the morning or late at
night.

I have used MSCONFIG before but not that particular choice. I had tried to
untick the boxes under the start up tab on the far right. I always got the
msg about not being logged in as the administrator and access denied. But it
always did have the items unchecked and they were virus like items as well.
So I have deleted them at last. Found them myself in the registry files.

Ok I have a bit to do. I appreciate your support..Creator.

Thank you..

Regards..

Dear Sandy,

Thank you for getting back to me so promptly.

I have downlaoded the Super Anti Spyware to which you refer. I dont know if
it is the Final version or not. But seems to have the same number.

I have run it a few times now. Scheduled to do so..I guess.

I let it run on the whole system. I didn't use it specifically on Zip files.
But did scan just program files as well seperately. Or ar you saying that the
file I would d/l is Clean..??

So I will do everything that I am asked to do.

Thank you for your help.

Dear Gerry,

I did send a reply to you with a huge list of information from Event Viewer.

It hasn't arrived in this Newsgroup yet. Not sure if it got lost. Or was too
big to post.

It took me ages to go through the Application logs and copy and paste to the
body of the reply.

I will be disappointed if it doesn't arrive back at you. But I do apologise
if on seeing it, it blows you away, with the number of entries.

Thanks you so much for your help Gerry.

"Clean" .zip file. Good luck.......meant that ..what you will download
from the link was bug-free
(I had just downloaded & opened it here) Did you place & Open the
patch in the program folder?

Meredith

Well yeah I can, but like I said it took ages and it will again to go thru
them all without doubling up.

So I will do the changes to the start up and I have burnt a disc with the XP
SP3 I d/l last night and I will boot from that, hopefully that will work.

If so I won't send all that stuff to you. If not, rest assured I will seek
your help real quick!!

Thanks Gerry,

Hi,

I did the changes you suggested in the MSCONFIG. I hid the Microsoft items
and disablde the rest.

I went to the System ini and Boot ini and unticked all the items listed was
that correct? Applied and Ok'd.

I restarted the machine and it takes me back to a weird way of instructions.
Which I have been seeing alot in past two days. A Blue screen and having to
F3 and then not having an A drive with my Dell or a disks with information.
It says it can't find the CD rom.

I restarted the machine with XP without the setup worded and tried to
install the SP3 from the burnt disk and then from file on the pc.

The message now is that the file I downloaded is not a valid Win32
application.

Therefore it will not install on my machine.

Did I d/l the wrong file? The machine would be 64? not 32?

I am confused now.

Please help.

Sorry..I did what you told me to do. But typed the wrong thing.

Dot selected Selective start up...everything is unchecked except Load System
Services and Use Original BOOT.INI

System ini and Win ini tabs are empty. (unchecked). Therefore all items
inside those tabs are unticked..correct?

The BOOT INI tab has nothing selected inside is that right?

Service Tab .. all the Microsoft items are ticked the rest are unticked.

The Start Up tab... items are all unticked.

I am running XP Professional Version 2002. And SP 2...
I see on that Control Panel Display that it talks about System 32.. SO
presume Im using Sytem 32.

I don't know how to check for Partitions. SO cannot answer how many I have
right now.

And I don't know if My Documents is on a seperate partition. I will check if
you tell me how.

I haven't backed up files/contact lists etc for a longtime for Outlook.

And I always struggle to do a reformat alone. I just don't have a foolproof
way of reinstalling properly and get stuck with black screen asking for
information.

I have tried to repair MS Office by using the discs that came with the DELL
computer. Earlier I got the msg about a CAB file missing when I tried to use
MS set up 2003.

From the disk- missing file D:\ZF561407.Cab Error 1311. Verify that the
files exists and that you can access it.

I get an error msg Number 1311. Source file not found. C:\MSOCache\All
User\9000409-60011D3-8CFE-0150048333C9\ZF61407CAB. When trying to fix from
the hard drive's files using Detect and Repair.

How can a vital file go missing from a CD?

I bought a new Logitech camera so that is working,,so in the end maybe the
older camera just failed.

I am receiving and sending email thru OUtlook Express. But I have older
emails that I need to access and all my contact list and addresses on the
Outlook program. So I am still hopeful of resolving that issue.

I will reboot later and see what msg I get this time.

Thank you for your continued interest and support.
