GC not available

hi
recently i did a promote operation with newly installed win2k server to act as DC and made the original DC to be the ADC. now, when ever i add new user in the new DC, it works fine only when the ADC is on. when the ADC is off, DC tries to search and later displays message that Global Catalog is not available, though it creates the account taking longer time. is it possible to transfer GC to the new DC? if so how?

hi,
as mentioned in the web page, i did the said steps: i.e. browsed Active Directory Sites and Services. there is no such directory enlisted named "Sites". Is it that this feature is an add on feature. as such other items are visible namely:
builtin, computers, Domain Controllers, ForeignSecurityPrincipals, LostAndFound, System, users, Infrastructure

i have done the advanced option in the console to view the items. hence i think that this needs ferther suggestion.

pls guide.

I'm having some trouble wrapping my brain around this. If you have Active
Directory properly installed and active on any domain controller, you should
be able to browse the following branches in this order:

Sites
- Default-First-Site-Name
- Servers
- [SERVERNAME1]
- NTDS Settings
- [SERVERNAME2]
- NTDS Settings
.... etc ...

then right-click the NTDS Settings, select Properties, and the first dialog
should tell you if that server is a Global Catalog server.

If Active Directory is properly installed and working, this is inescapable -
there's no way this information should be unavailable if AD is correctly
configured.
