Gateway icon disappearing from taskbar

Hi, my wife and I have our PCs wirelessly networked (802.11b, Linksys pc
cards). I connect through her machine b/c her office has a phone line (we're
on, sigh, dial-up). When her PC connects to the Internet, a little icon
appears in the task bar indicating the status. I can also disconnect using
this icon.

Lately, that icon/applet has been disappearing, so I have to walk over to
her machine to disconnect--or tell her to disconnect herself. I don't have
my task bar customized so that it hides inactive icons, nor have I changed
the network configuration. The icon is just disappearing.

Any clues?

Open the Network Connections folder and see if the "Internet Gateway"
connection appears. If it does, right click it, click Properties, and
put a check mark next to "Show icon in notification area when
connected".

If that doesn't fix the problem, try these steps:

1. Make sure that the "SSDP Discovery Service" is running:

a. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
b. Double click Services and Applications.
c. Double click Services.
d. Double click "SSDP Discovery Service". If the Service status is
Stopped, click Start.
e. If the Startup type is Disabled, set it to Manual.

2. Make sure that the "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control
Client" networking service is installed:

a. Click Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.
b. Click "Add/Remove Windows Components".
c. Scroll down the list of components and double click "Networking
Services".
d. If there's a box for "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and
Control Client", put a check mark in it.

3. Disable any firewall program on your computer.

You might need to reboot or to disable and enable the network
connection to make changes take effect.

If none of that helps (and I've seen cases where that happens),
consider using Remote Disconnect Utility instead. Get it here,
clicking "Downloads" to access it:

Thanks for your help, but I can't find what you're asking me to find. I'm on
XP Home Edition (not Pro), and when you r-click My Computer, there is no
Manage button on any of the tabs. There is Device and Driver Manager on the
Hardware tab.

As for the first suggestion, The "Show icon in notification area when
connected" is checked.
