Gaming problems..... :-(

R

Ricky

Hi,
I recently bought a new pc, here are some of the specs
before I mention the problem:
Intel P4 2,8GHz HyperThreading, 800MHz FSB.
512MB DDR RAM.
ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 128MB.
WD 80GB 7200rpm 2MB cache harddisk.
Albatron PX865PE PRO Motherboard.
DVD Player, CD-burner. And iiyama 19" monitor (1451).
Windows XP Home Edition.

Now you think you'd be able to play like almost anything
on this system. And you can.....well at least for some
time (not long anyway) and then the game stops. For
example, Unreal Tournament; Black and White; Dungeon
Siege; Unreal Tournament 2003. I can install the games in
a normal way and it gives no errors. It also gives rather
often a message that says; GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT, or
something like Critical Error, this happens in Unreal. It
always happens when I'm playing and one can imagine how
annoying this can be..... I've updated everything, used
all the patches available, yet nothing seems to work. I
also tried searching lots of forums for help, but no one
seemed to have an answer although it occurs quite often!

I'm sorry for the "big" story but I really hope someone
can help me, thanks in advance anyway!!

Hi Ricky,

I'll make this post in 2 parts. The first are instructions that may help
you use the information in the error messages to determine the problem,
and the second part is my all purpose troubleshooter which should help. :)

================== PART I =========================
Here are some knows solutions for tackling Kernel 32 Errors,
Invalid Page Faults, and Exception Errors.. if it's a STOP error
this site has extensive coverage: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

2. Reinstall the game to overcome any data corruption:
a. Backup any saved games and/or mods to a safe location.
b. Uninstall the game using Control Panel / Add-Remove programs.
c. Clear any references to the game leftover in your registry using:
http://www.pcmedixwebs.com/regclean.htm
d. After a reboot close & exit your Antivirus and any other programs
using this method: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331796
e. Install the game again from your original CD, do not use a backup.
f. Don't reuse the saved games/mods until you properly test the game.

3. Run a Virus Scan: http://housecall.antivirus.com

4. Remove any adware or spyware using Ad-Aware from: www.lavasoftusa.com

5. Finally, if none of the above works, Microsoft has an extensive troubleshooter
which applies to all games, including the titles listed in beginning of the article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=280068#ScopeCause4

=================== PART II ============================
Rather than give you one step at a time, I'm going to give you
my entire list, so you can know the steps ahead of time.

Of course, be sure to visit the manufactures website for any
patches or updates that they may have available. They help!

Start with the first step on the list, and if you have any questions
please feel free to ask them before continuing. Good luck! :)

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Bare knuckle problem fighting techniques (not for the timid):
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

5. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to detect an over-
heating issue, in which case add more fans or replace defective ones.
Tip: Motherboard Monitoring Software: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

6. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to remove all
extra adapters (network cards, extra RAM sticks, modem, scussi,
sound card, unplug CD drives if not needed to verify CD), and then
try the game again. If the problem's solved look into a 400 watt P/S.

7. Test your RAM using: http://www.memtest86.com/memt30.zip
after you extract that zip file, click on the README.txt file for the
instructions on how to create the boot floppy to test your RAM.

8. Click Start / Control Panel /Administrative Tools / Event Viewer /
Click the Applications listing on the left / in the right pane look for
yellow or red symbols and doubleclick them to identify the problems.

9. Run Setup.exe on your Windows 98/Me/XP/2000 CD to reinstall
Windows over itself without erasing your programs and data. Once
everything works fine reinstall updates one at a time from:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com test the game after each update.
