Games on MS Windows XP Professions or Media Center 2005

Hi,

I am buying a new laptop and I need Windows Pro so I can use IIS and create
ASP.NET web-sites.

But I also want to run games like Civ 4, Age of Empires, Age of Mythology,
Sim City 3000 etc

Will games that run on Windows XP Home edition run on Windows XP Pro?

thanks

Philip

Yup Windows XP Professional and MCE are both supped upped feature-set
versions of Home, the codebase is identical. Anything that runs on Home
*should* run on any other sku of Windows XP.

Civilisation 4 definitely works, Age of Empires definitely works, so does
Mythology, but I've not personally tried Sim City 3000. But Sim City 4
does.

Thanks, that's good news

One I forgot to mention was Command & Conquer (Red Alert)

has anyone had any experience of trying to run games like this on Windows XP
Pro.

I've heard of problems with graphics drivers and so on...

thanks if anyone has any ideas

Hi,

I thought that Pro and MCE were based on the NT kernal - or was that Windows
2000 Professional?

thanks for your knowledge :)

Every is on the NT kernel now. Windows Me was the last of the dark age
OSs.

Red Alert 2 works on Windows XP, never tried Red Alert 1 though - I had
enough problems with it on hi-spec machines with Windows 9x since it had no
way to pace the speed of the game, it would just get faster and faster on
higher end machines.

Jimmy and Paul both gave you solid responses and information, but there is
one "gotcha" among the mix, and that is not all systems - mainly video
cards - will run The Sims 2. Our daughters are highly disappointed,
but more toward that game with the specific graphics requirements, than the
computers they use. My word of caution would be to delve into the graphics
system on the new computer to make sure it matches up with what you want to
run. Not all graphics cards are created alike, nor will they run
"everything" in sight with the newer game requirements for shading, etc. Do
your homework first, and then you won't be disappointed.

I had a problem with Red Alert 2. I'm am guessing it was because it by
default wanted to start in 640x480 mode and no compatibility settings or
anything would get past it stalling. I ended up simply copying the same
installation folder from a 98SE box and it then ran fine. Difference was
under 98SE I'd already choose Options within the game and changed res to
800x600 so that's what it used when starting under XP.

Hi, everyone. I have a laptop computer that has XP on it. I just bought
"Age of Mythology', and it says it can't play the game because the graphics
card I ahve won't support the game. However, I can play both Age of Empires
and the expansion, plus the Age of Empires II and it's expansion. So why
can't I play Mythology, and how do I fix it so that I can play it?
Thanks for your help!

Hi spauli1,

This article contains a list of the minimum system requirements for
Age of Mythology and Microsoft Age of Mythology: The Titans:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331403

If you don't meet the requirements, an upgrade may be in order. :)

I have an Everex Stepnote NC 1502 model, and I believe I have all the
requirements for playing the game, yet it still won't play. What do I do now?

Hi spauli1,

I believe that notebook might not be equipped with a video
card capable of running graphic intensive games such as AOM.

Which video card did you order when you bought that laptop?
