Games crashes after July Updates

Since installing the various July updates all the DX9 games crash on loading
and shut down. I am running Win XP Pro on a Intel 6800 Extreme Core Duo 2 and
2GB RAM.

I remember that there was a similar problem with an update some time ago and
a fix was produced that you could download to fix the problem.

Anyone else had similar problems or know of a way to correct this behaviour?

You may find the answer in the thread "July Microsoft Update Issues" -
it seems after the update, many processes no longer have permission to
write files, only read them. I'm not sure how to rectify this though.
