Games cause computer crash

U

UMHELP

This problem has happened in the past few months. Around
the time microsoft started releasing those updates for the
sobig worm and such. I downloaded old ones they said were
critical also, and ever since then every time i play
computer games the computer crashes. This happens with
games that are in first person. Games like Mafia do not
crash, and thats a third person game. Games like counter-
strike or battle field crash. I would be playing one time
maybe 30 minutes. THen screen go black, then go back to
what i last saw and then the computer will be jammed
making me have to reset it using hte power switch. This is
very annoying. THe next time i got back, it will take less
than 10 minutes to do the same thing over. I tried
everything you guys said on stuff related, about msconfig,
about setting hardware acc to two to the left, turning off
anti alias, all sorts of things. And these problems arent
caused by my video card because I was using the same
drivers for over 6 months then I get this problem so I
update drivers for card and no luck still. Computer is not
overheating, I check bios its 120-125 degrees farenheit.

System:
HP Pavillion
Windows XP Home
1.67 ghz
512 mb ram
80 GB HD
cd-rw
32 mb nvidia geforce2 integrated gpu

I even used a virus scanner from a site you gave and I
found three minor trojans that would not cause this
because this has been happening before I got them. What is
the problem? I suspect its something in the updates. Or,
my computer IS overheating, I looked inside, no dust, fans
working well, evrything is fine. I have latest directx and
have since it came out. My power surge protector is where
I have plugged computer in for long time, since my old
computer and I dont think it has to do with power supply.
Same cords since beginning when I got computer. Computer
is about 3 years old little younger and problem happening
since 6 or so months, around late july. What is the
problem? Thanks

Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Mainboard Monitoring Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://www.memtest86.com/memt30.zip
after you extract that zip file, click on the README.txt file for the
instructions on how to create the boot floppy to test your RAM.

I do not think you can set it. You either have it or you don't. If your
current one is rated to low then you will need to upgrade it to the proper
amount..

That's right. The power supply that originally came with
my computer was 250 Watts, which couldn't handle the
demand of a gaming system, so I bought a 430 Watt
model to replace it. (Never touch the voltage switch!).

Hi,

| but the model has been working well since i bought
| computer about 2.5 years ago. So why should hat be it?

It's possible that your power supply might break down after
2.5 years, or not be able to handle the accessories you've added.

That sound you hear could be your processor overheating.

Solution: Follow my previous advice, or take your computer
to the local repair shop for a second opinion. :)

Please let me know how it works out for you. Best of luck sdf!

A Possible fix:

My wifes' system did this. It was a conflict problem between AMD Athlon Processor and Detonator Drivers. To fix her system I went to Nvidia.com and went to the Driver page for the vid card and looked in the left hand side menu for archived drivers. I then downloaded a 45.XX driver and installed it on her system. Her system is fixed now.

Although that worked on her system, when I loaded XP Pro on my system last week, I ran into the same problem. I still can not fix mine.
