FX5900 v Raedon 9600 Pro

Hi guys

I've seen an offer over Xmas for a Leadtek Geforce 5900 128MB card at half
price (£95 opposed to £190). Is this worth getting or would I be better off
with a 9600 Pro at £120. I'm guessing the geforce would be better as its
normal retail price is a lot higher. Any opinions welcome.

I currently have a Geforce Ti4200 with a P4 2.53 GHz and 512mb RAM. Would
either of these cards make enough of an impression to be worth getting in
the first place.

Thanks again and merry xmas.

I should add I use a TFT screen that limits my resolution to 1024x768.

compared Ti4400 vs FX5900. 4400 is not far away from your 4200.

Your current Ti4200 is more than capable of running most stuff at
1024x768. Both the Radeon 9600 or the Geforce 5900 will outperform
your card in benchmarks but I honestly doubt you'll see much
difference.

I've recently been testing an FX5900 against the 9600Pro, and the FX is
*significantly* quicker. At £95 you be insane not to buy it right away.
(who's offering it, BTW?).

The Geforce is comparable to the ATI 9700p / 9800p and the 9600p is no match
to these.

Be careful in exaggerating the 5900. It appears to have a somewhat
higher fillrate than the 9700p, but falls down in shader performance, as do
all nvidia cards. At the $150 pricepoint though, it's certainly a good
deal.

I saw the advert earlier today but didn't pay enough attention to catch
the opening time. Does anyone know? Normally it's 9am, but it might be
10am on Boxing Day in line with Sunday.

I'm tempted, even though I don't usually get up that early even whn it
isn't Christmas. Even if they haven't got the 5900XT, I might be able to
get another bargain.

Is the £95 the trade price PC World get these cards at?

Wrong. The FX5900 is more comparable to the 9700np/9800np. It is def
better then the 9600p tho.

the 9800 non pro is about as fast as the 9700pro, or is it?

Yes and I would agree, but I was replying within the CONTEXT of the thread
where the OP wanted options of the relative performance of the FX5900 (NOT
THE 5950 !!) to the 9600pro.

So, did anyone manage to find this offer at PC World? I popped in to my
local store today, quite early, but couldn't even find a shelf label
listing it. I'm guessing here but, no doubt it was available, but only
in a rare, few stores throughout the country.

I'm sure I've seen PC World adverts for other Leadtek graphics cards at
unusually cheap prices before. I distinctly remember scouring for
current prices in the then current issue of Micro Mart, after a PC World
advert appeared offering a Leadtek card, as I was skeptical and was
trying to find the catch. This time around, after reading here, I
decided to go for it. Guess I know now what the catch is. :(

<smug="very">I got one</smug>. The offer was for Boxing Day only. There
were none on the shelf, nor any labels when I got there either. If I
hadn't managed to collar an assistant fairly quickly I would probably
have given up, but he found one in a back room and cross-matched it on
the printed list of one day offers. I was still looking for the catch
until I got home and fired it up - even better, it's a quality piece of
kit with a classy heatsink and quiet fan, so that saves me buying a
Zalman heatpipe - it was such an un-PC World experience!

BTW it's a 5900XT, not a 5900. Judging by even the pre-sale price I
presume the XT means it's cut down a bit (the opposite of ATI's "XT"),
but FWIR here it's still considerably better than any flavour of Radeon
9600.

Yes, it's just a slightly slower 5900 - 700 vs 800mhz memory I believe.
Very little difference.

So they fixed the pixel shading then? amazing Nvidia are, don't change the
core but can fix a severe hardware problem with drivers :s
The 5900 may be quicker, but try running anything with PS 2.0 and you'll
soon see :)
