FX5900 or Radeon 9800 pro??

Hi all,

I'm looking for a good graphic's card and i'm trying to figure out what's
the best out of these two card's:

MSI FX5900 128mb- Graphic's architecture 256 bit

ATI sapphire radeon 9800 pro atlantis 128mb/128 bit
But they also do the 256 bit version whitch look's better .


The 9800 pro seem's to have a higher score in the chart's here:

and also seem's to be the better card at anti analising etc.

Anyone got these card's and could share your thought's?.

I would be playing mostly unreal tournament 2004 and farcry.

The 9800 will walk over the 5900 in FarCry, performance will be closer in
UT2004 with the 9800 having a slight lead. The 9800 will look better than
the 5900 in FarCry. I've read somewhere that Nvidia cards do have some
rendering problems in FarCry.

No, *all* 9800PRO cards are 256 bit. They come with either 128MB or 256MB of RAM, which is probably what
is confusing you.

Hi Rap,
Within the past couple of months I have researched and built an AMD64 system
complete with a Sapphire ATI 9800 pro, "only" the 128mb version. Up to this
point I had been an Nvidia disciple but following many reviews on the web I
came to the conclusion that ATI gave the best bang for the buck. I figured
that I would have to put up with the bad drivers for the performance this
card would give me with the system I was going to build.
It came as a really pleasant surprise that this card is superb in every
detail. The drivers are rock steady and coupled with UT2004 which I play
daily online the colours are a revelation. My wife has my old (18 months)
computer and the richness of colour in UT on the new computer is obvious.
The old computer is running a GF4 btw. Also I am getting one hundred+ with
all details maxed out. This card has not had so much as a single glitch.
Don't forget that the 9800pro requires a dedicated molex supply from the
psu. This comes supplied so should be no problem. Make sure your psu is up
to the power required to run the system.
Having said all this does this now make me an ATI convert. Well no. However
it does tell me to research thoroughly any piece of equipment I need and
make my own mind up at the time.
I consider the 9800pro to be the best card on the market in the sub 200
price range at the moment. The only thing you can be sure of is that in a
matter of months it will be obsolete and some new "flavor" will supercede
it.

Thank's for the reply dave and everyone else, I have been with nvida for a
few year's now and not had anything else, but now look's like it's ati's
turn. I'll get the 9800 pro 128mb 256bit as it seem's as you said best bang
for buck. Anyway I'm not one to spend large amount's on the latest card out,
so it will do me fine .

BTW,would you recommend the 256mb version as it's not that much more
exspensive?.

It is rather a rather odd bird; my guess is that marketing found a way to get rid of all the bum chips.

Hi again Rap,
As I've said I have the 128 memory in my card and am totally pleased with
it. I really do have UT2004 fully maxed out at over 100 fps. Even with my
"old" computer (AMD 1.9 Nvid GF4 card) I was hitting 70 fps with graphics
tweaked down. The Unreal graphics engine is pretty good at being computer
spec kind. However I see you play Farcry which I think will give any
computer or graphics card made in the next two years a serious run for it's
money. I do not have Farcry but from what I can see of the specs, and as you
say if the price is close then maybe buy the 256mb version. Pipelines etc
are the same.
By the way these cards do get hot so make sure your case is well cooled.
I hope you enjoy your new card. I'd like to know your final decision and any
difference it makes to running Farcry.
