Full Text Searches

We have a third party application in which one of our
clients cannot perform a Full Text Search. We believe
the problem is because she does not have "write"
permissions to the c:\windows\help folder. Users other
than administrators only have read/execute, read, list
folder contents (which was the default, when we rolled
out XP). Therefore the client cannot have the *.fts
files automatically create. If an administrator logs on
and performs the exact same search, the *.fts file is
automatically created and updated.

I can't seem to find any specific article talking about
the need to change the default permissions for everyone.
I just see articles talking about how *.fts files can be
cleaned up because they will re-create themselves.

Help?

Help?

C:\windows\help is the folder where (as it appears) help files for
windows are kept. Seems like for a third party appliction, they should
not be depending on user having write priviledges in a system folder.

Suggest you ask the developer of the application (or review the
documetnation) to find out what folders they tell you user has to have
added priviledges for their application. Hopefully they know what they
are doing and can advise. It could be you only have to set some
environment variable to application setting to specify where the .fts
(full text search) files go for this 3rd party application. I don't
see any special reason for it to be required they go into a system folder.
