Full restore didn't work; should it have?

Bert Hyman

Running XP Pro SP2.

My boot drive failed, so I just replaced it and ->thought I'd be able
to use NTBACKUP to "restore" the system from the fresh full backups
I'd been religiously making.

1. I had a current full, "System State" backup
2. I did a base install of XP Pro SP2 on the new drive
3. Logged in as Administrator, I did a restore of the last backup,
overwriting everything and restoring the "System State"

When I rebooted, it looked like it ->almost worked. The login screen
showed icons for the two users installed on the system, but the
display was at the wrong resolution, had a peculiar cross-hatch
pattern overlayed on it and keyboard and mouse were both dead.

Some particulars that may have had an effect on all this:

1. The new drive was bigger than the old one (of course!); 160GB
instead of 80GB.
2. The only XPPro-SP2 installable CD I had was from my MSDN
subscription, so the base install was from that.

NTBackup never did do a "complete" backup/restore. My experience is that any
backup utility delivered with Windows (any version) is never complete. Never
rely on these. Look for a more complete backup solution by another company.
