FTP sites and pinging

I am having two possibly related problems.

First I can't access any FTP sites - I have checked the obvious settings
under the advanced tab to no avail.

Second I can access normal web sites but I can't PING any of them.

Are the two problems related and what is the solution particularly to the
FTP sites question?

Just a possibility... Have you set up sharing of your internet connection
with other computers on a local network? If so, try deselecting the
connection sharing. I found this cured my FTP download problem. Might work
for you too.

I don't know if it has any bearing on pinging!

Have you tried using the ftp command line service (or telnet) too?
If that doesn't work either the problem is independent of IE (the topic of this newsgroup)
and you would probably be better served in a newsgroup which specializes in networking
for your OS (which you have neglected to disclose.)

Because of measures which have been taken to counter moronic "denial of service exploits"
the only thing that ping can be used reliably for these days is checking DNS lookups.

You don't have enough information about your symptom yet to consider a "solution".
