what is the difference in a client and server?

A client is the program you run on your machine to be able to connect to
an ftp server. An FTP server is a program running that allows people with
clients to connect to.

A server does just that..serves up web pages and files for people to
browse/download.

A client is the program that connects to the server. If I'm running an
ftp server, that means my computer is running a program that allows
people to connect to my computer and upload/download files.

The people connecting to my computer must use a client. It appears I'm
not the greatest at explaining these kinds of things lol Hope it helps
you understand. umm, you could consider your browser (IE, Opera,
Netscape, Mozilla, etc.) a client and when you goto
www.pricelessware.org, the computer which holds the pages/files for PW
serves it up for you :)

Nice answer burnr but I already know the difference
between a server and a client. :D
Nevertheless is a good start for an explanation and can
help others. Thanks!
However, what I would really like to know is:
Are there any good FTP servers (Freeware) out there?
I would like one that could be highly configurable and that
has PASV mode and MD5 pw support at least.
I have used Serv-U and Visnetic FTP Server before but I'm
looking for freeware alternatives even if not that good.

And by the way, if you or anyone could point me a good freeware
FTP client I would also check it out.

Thanks in advance

Ack! lol oh well, so much for internet 101. ;)
I think it's already mentioned earlier in thread, Filezilla, great client,
also a server available, but I've never used the server.
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

SmartFTP is a nice client http://www.smartftp.com

I personally use LeechFTP the most. I have it archived here,
http://freeware4u.com/modules/mydownloads/singlefile.php?lid=42

I have used for a server CesarFTP http://www.aclogic.com/ not sure about
the MD5 pw support though.
