FTP publishing

R

Rick Budde

I am creating a site for a not-for-profit that has
arranged for some donated hosting but the host does not
support Front Page Extensions.

This is my first time using FTP and I am shooting blanks
thus far. I am attempting to use Front Page and not a
separate FTP program. Is it possible to do this or must I
obtain an FTP program?

If it is possible using Front Page, please walk me
through the steps. The info I was provided is:

Web site: www.familysafetynetwork.info
User name: FSN@tetontel
FTP: FTP.silverstar.com
and of course a password (which I won't list here).

Help provided by the host, lists Front Page 98 (and 97)
instructions as follows:

type url of server: http://www.yourdomain.com/~username

Doing so yields an error meesage basically saying that
the site doesn't exist. There are some steps listed after
that but obviously I haven't gotten that far yet.

Any help that can be provided will be very much
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When you specify the publish destination, specify
ftp://ftp.silverstar.com
or
ftp://ftp.silverstar.com/public_html

The first form will typically land you in the Unix home
directory for the username you log in with.

In many cases, the Unix home directory is *not* the root
of your Web site. To access the root of your Web site,
you have to cd to some other folder, such as public_html.
This is where you would use the second form.

Jim:

I have tried both approaches and come back to the Publish
login screen each time. I have tried upper and lower
case. Still no luck.

For user, I type FSN@tetontel
For password, I type the one I was given

No where does it ask me, at least as far as I have
gotten, for the site address as it does when accessing a
host supporting Front Page extensions.

Any other wisdom you can impart?

If you need step-by-step instructions, you'll need to
tell me what version of FrontPage you have. The
publishing dialogs have changed quite a bith for each
version.

However, wherever you put
http://www.familysafetynetwork.info
before, that's where you put
ftp://ftp.silverstar.com
or
ftp://ftp.silverstar.com/public_html

I am using Front Page 2002. This is a site that is being
published for the first time to this host.

Steps taken:

1. File | Publish web.

2. In the Publish destination dialog, I type:
ftp://ftp.silverstar.com

3. I am taken to a Name and Password required dialog, I
type in: FSN@tetontel and the password I was given. I
click OK

4. I am cycled back to the Name and Password dialog with
the FSN@tetontel still in the Name field and the Password
field cleared.

I cannot get past this dialog. Again, in the steps I have
taken thus far, I have never entered the site address:
http://www.familysafetynetwork.info

Same thing happens if I use
ftp://ftp.silverstar.com/public_html in step 2.

I am beginning to think the password I was given may be
bad.

Rick, try:

ftp://www.silverstar.com

and/or check with the host for the correct URL to use for uploading via FTP.

Thomas:

Thanks for chiming in on this one.

Trying your idea, I am taken to a dialog box telling me
there is no web there and asking if I want to create one.

If I click OK, it gives me the error message dialog
telling me it is unable to open the site.

As to your suggestion to contact the host, their website
tells me to use: "http:///www.yourdomain.com/~username"

These are instructions listed for Front Page 98. There is
no newer version of Front Page listed on their site
instructions. This doesn't work either.

By the way, I don't understand where SilverStar.Com comes
into this whole thing. The host's domain is
www.tetontel.com.

Rick,

Why don't you try to just get in with ftp using IE just to see if you can get into the site first. IE6 has ftp built in...pull up the help on it to see the syntax you have to enter the password/address in in the address bar (I forget).

Just my 2 euro.

Rick,
IIRC, the first time you ftp to a new account on an Apache/UNIX it is done
with the IP address.
ftp://123.456.789.123/public_html

Your host should have given you the info to do this.

The server will prompt you for the user name and password, and then the web
will publish to the correct location.

Steve:

Trying your suggestion, I get the message that the web
server at that address does not exist.

I got the prompt (for user name and password) once and
was asked if I wanted to create a site. I answered yes
and got the prompt again. Then I got the error message.

I'm beginning to believe there's a problem with the account because by now
the domain should have propagated so that publishing to ftp://domain.com or
ftp://www.domain.com would work.

What happens if you try to open the server address using
http://domainname.com/~username ??
You should get a server default page.

If http://domainname.com/~username returns a 404 there's no valid account
on the server.

I don't get a "404" page but I do get a "page not found"
page from IE.

I have sent a note off to the host and asked them to
confirm the ftp, username, password, etc. that I was
given by the non-profit. I have also asked them to
provide me with a step-by-step. I don't know if they will
be of any help but you never know.

Thanks for the help.

1) for instructions on publishing using FTP see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=301553
2) you will not be able to use the http mode unless your host has the FP SE installed
According to http://www.familysafetynetwork.info/_vti_inf.html your site does not have the FP SE
(if you have use FTP then the FP SE need to be reinstalled by your host)
3) check w/ your host on the correct user ID and password for your site
(normally a user ID does not include the domain as in FSN@tetontel, and would just be FSN)
