FTP problems / Counter problems

G

Guest

I am a novice webdesigner that has been managing a site I created for over a
year now. My site delphiassoc.org is simple and does nothing fancy. I added
a counter to it about 7 or 8 months ago. I have been using FP extensions to
publish using the HTML alternative, as opposed to FTP. Then, 2 weeks ago,
something went wrong and I no longer could publish. My webhost said to use
FTP to publish to the web, so I tried that. Now I can not go back to
publishing using HTML. More importantly, I seem to have gotten a big problem
in my web on computer because if I try to delete the counter it crashes
Frontpage every time. I need help bad. Can anyone help me?:
1. Get rid of my possessed Counter.
2. Get back to the good old days of HTML from FTP where my problems started.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Looks like your host removed the FP extensions from your web...probably why
they told you to use ftp.

That is the first thing I thought, too. I wrote to the webhost and they
assured me that FP Extensions was enabled. After endless error messages and
consulting with the webhost, I decided to try FTP. Once I did, something
happened and I started crashing whenever I tried to remove the Counter. FP
was giving me messages in the report that led me to believe that the counter
may be at the heart of the problem. Now I just want to go back to the good
old days, when I would make small changes, save, publish and go on my way.
Is there a way to go back?

Do I need to start over? I even tried reinstalling FP 2002 but it didn't
help.

Any ideas?

Steve,

You are right on the money. Switching to FTP is where the nightmare really
began. But Frontpage gives me an error that the server does not support FP
Extensions. I have contacted my web host who has reset my settings, but it
just doesn't work. Is my machine possessed?

According to my tests, the extensions are *not* installed.

Disregard. I see that they *are* installed.
Try deleting the hit counter from both the remote and local web.

Reinsert the hit counter on your local web and publish (do a full publish,
since you just reinstalled the extensions).

See if the hit counter is then available.

The extensions are there now.

For S&Gs try opening your website from IE's tool bar; Edit With Frontpage
and see if you can open it that way (don't use this method normally). You'll
be prompted for un/pw - enter them and see what happens.

Tom,

The Hit Counter is possessed. I deleted it from all pages of the website
using Notepad and FTP server outside of Frontpage. It worked no problem.
Then I used FTP to load the files to my local hard drive without the counter.
I also used a program called FPCleaner to clean any temporary files. But
when I opened the website on Frontpage, the Hit Counter was still there!
It's possessed! How do I get rid of it on my local machine? If I try to
just delete the Hit Counter in Frontpage, it crashes the program every time
(It is a Frontpage Hit Counter). Do I have some special Frontpage virus?

Tom,

I appreciate you checking it out. My web host asked me to disable
extensions wait for a few minutes and then re-enable extensions to see if
that would help. According to the web host, frontpage extensions is now
re-enabled. Could you check it once more? Also, is there a way that I can
check it?

Thanks,

Chester

stop with the ftp if you ever want the extensions to stay working.

Rob,

First, what are S&G's?

Next, how do I open a web page on my local drive from IE and be able to edit?

Thanks,

| Rob,
|
| First, what are S&G's?

sheets & giggles

|
| Next, how do I open a web page on my local drive from IE and be able to
edit?

You don't.

What I suggested is a test to see if you can open your website "live" (the
server version) - a password test if you will...
Browse to your live website with IE, on IE's tool bar select Edit with
Frontpage, when the un/pw thing pops up enter the appro. and OK. If the
extensions are working and you have the correct un/pw the site will open up
"live" in FP.

PS... if you click Cancel it will open up in FP but you are not open to
"live" editing so don't choose Cancel at the un/pw prompt.

|
| Thanks,
