ftp freezes

Any FTP client I use on my computer (filezilla, wsftp, cmd line)
freezes up when i try to change directories to certain directories on
the server. It always freezes up on the same directory each time.
There is nothing special about this directory, when compared to the
others. I have already tried doing a "passive transfer" and that
didn't work.

Has any one else had this problem? How can it be fixed?

If its the same folder on the server that freezes then you dont have
permission to enter that folder. The ftp program should time out eventually.

It's not really freezing. It's just taking a
v.....e.....r.....y..........l.....o.....n.....g..........t.....i.....m.....e.....

Lately when doing FTP uploads to my website I get blisteringly fast (!)
speeds of *16 bytes a second*--if I'm lucky.

I never had this problem before and I thought I was the only person having
trouble with FTP but I'm starting to see other people complaining of similar
difficulties. I'm beginning to wonder if a recent Windows update fscked
something up.

I use ftp a lot, both uploads and downloads. I use flashfxp, and
bulletproof and occasonally getright for ftp downloads. I never use a
browser. I can't see what difference windows will make to general ftp if you
are not using IE. There is nothing I can think of that would interfere with
it. Are your problems only with one ftp server or any that you try and
access. Are you going through a proxy or direct. Ive seen some slowdowns
with some annonymous proxies but not with accessing ftp servers with say
flashfxp or another client. Can you ask someone else to try the same server
and see what speed they get. Are you sure its not specific to your computer
some conflict between programs/ports. What part of the world are your
from/trying to connect to. Its where you say it always freezes up on the
same directory which makes me think its probably server related. I would get
someone else to check from their computer the speeds they get on the same
directory.

I'm wondering if the firewall has something to do with it, i have
zonealarm. I have the same problem on 2 different servers, with any
FTP client I use.

I tested it, and y'all are not going to believe this, but, whenever i
try to create a directory that is 7 chars long, or cd into a directory
that is 7 chars long, it freezes. That was the only common connecting
thing.

I know it makes no sense, but that's what's happening.

well, the permissions are exactly the same as the other folders.

well. I set it to wait for 120 seconds before timing out and it still
times out. 120 seconds is a long time to do a change directory. Maybe
it does have something to do with recent windows updates though,

I will try to use some other computers and see if it does the same.

provider blocking / prioritising the ports, port 21 is a
classic

Could you explain more about this? What would the symptoms be?
