I want to accomplish off-site data backup between two remote Windows 2003
servers via the Internet, each with a 3MB/768k DSL connection. (I couldn't
find a W2K3 discussion group.)
To make things manageable, I would like to find software that will only send
CHANGES to a file.
For example, my accounting file is 440MB in size. If I bring it to the
second computer on a CD and load it, the next day I would like to FTP the new
file by just sending the new information (<1MB) -- sending all 440MB would
just not work with a 768k upload speed.
In fact, I would love to create a script/job that copies deltas to all files
that have changed in a particular directory or drive to the other machine.
Thus, I would be able to mirror the data on both machines with relatively
little transmission.
Am I on drugs or dreaming?
1) Is there an FTP or equivalent protocol that does this? (I know, for
example, that PCAnywhere only sends the deltas in a screenshot, rather than
the whole screen, for refreshes. Seems to me that the same could be done for
files.)
2) Is there a product that has this technology that could also do the
directory/file management/synching?
Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!
