FTP client software

J

JL Amerson

I had asked this once before so forgive for deleting the answer. I want to
access the free webspace my ISP allows me. I must use a FTP client to upload
the information. I honestly know squat about this so............ What is a
decent freebie FTP software to use? I know, I'll get what I pay for, but I'm
still looking for a full-time job and need to keep things inexpensive.

FrontPage.

Just enter ftp://yourdomain.com as the publish destination.

There is a built-in command-line utility in Windows. If you want to dig into
the Windows help files, you can use it.

OH MY!! You mean I can just go in, create my page and then publish it to
that?? I don't have to do more than that? So why do people with FP use FTP
software?

S

Steve Easton

Yep.
Just check with your ISP/Host for the correct ftp path to publish to.

Some folks don't like the way FrontPage FTP's, but it always works for me.

Well, I can do it if I enter that destination in IE. Am I supposed to be
able to do it within FP? Can you bring it down a little bit more? I'm so
used to just hitting Save and it's a done deal. I am a complete novice with
FTP.

(BTW, thanks for helping me Steve. You're a sweetie!)

You can use IE too from the address line, can't ya?? Never used this to publish though, but I use it to copy out my form results files.

Because FP can not connect to all FTP servers.

I have that but I may have a work around. Not as smooth as FP does it for my
other sites but not too difficult either.

I have friends who want to see my wedding pictures and some who want to see
my beadwork. :)

He's helped me a few times and always been very nice about my lack of
knowledge. You might be too - I just need to get to know you a little bit
better. :)

You won't be able to use anything that require the FrontPage extensions.
Such as hit counters, submission forms.

Oh, not a problem. I just want a simple site to post some of my wedding
photos for friends and family. Nothing spectacular.

S

Steve Easton

Then create the site just like you would any other site.
When it's time to publish, select File > Publish Web.. ( Publish site...
with FP 2003 ) and then enter the ftp:// address your ISP/Host gives you
instead of http://

Very simple, the FP run-time component requires the FP extensions, and FTP really should not be used
on server with the FP extensions unless you completely understand how the extensions work, and what
files are safe to upload, etc.
