Front Page extensions

I've just learned that my broadband servic allows me a certain amount of
free space, as do most ISPs. However, also like most free space, they do not
support any Front Page extesnions and I have to FTP my files in.

I've been maintaining a very simple site for an NPO and I'll admit I know
very little about what all I *could* do if I'd take the time. There are
times I'd like to post a few photos or a personal note on my own space. So
how do I know what requires the extensions and what doesn't? Also, would
anyone like to recommend their favorite FTP? My ISP links to one but I
figure that since some of you use this, you'd be a reliable source of
information.

TIA,
JoAnn

Bascially, you need the extensions for features that make
something happen on the Web server when a visitor
requests the page. Hit Counter, Save Results, Database
Results Wizard, ...

I go gut simple. Type a URL such as:
ftp://ftp.mydomain.com/public_html/myweb
into any Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer address
box. Then, drag and drop as you would in (guess what)
Windows Explorer.

Also, do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they
are subtle, and quick to anger.

Have used WS_FTP (clumsy interface) and CuteFTP (it's okay) but
Filezilla tops them both.

If I understand you correctly, you'll probably just use FP to edit pages
locally on your computer (either disk-based or with a web server
installed, depending on your needs) and then FTP your updated files from
your computer to your server. At the most rudimentary level, FP
extensions allow you to edit files directly on the server or to move
files easily (via Publish Web) to a production environment (ie, public
web site). Without the FP server extensions you have to use something
like FTP to copy files to the web server.
