FS 2004 Hangup

Just installed FS2004 (actually several attempts). It
starts, displays the splash screen, and freezes. It does
not lock up the system and can be exited with task
manager. I spent 2 hours on the phone with tech support
trying multiple settings and tests with no luck. All
drivers are current. It runs fine on my old Win98 PC.
My system:
Sony Vaio PCV-RX560
Win XP Pro
1700gHz P4 Processor
512mb RAM
Nvidia TNT64 graphics
Plenty of HD space
