Repeated Halting

I am running a 1.5Mhz P4, 512MB RAM, Sony Vaio on Wndows XP Home.
Every so often, it is random, but close to every two days, my system will begin to freeze, then return to normal, then freeze again, once every second. It locks up everything, mouse cursor, typing, even audio and video playback has noticable pauses in-sync with these freezes. It will repeat this "halting" until I am forced to restart my computer. What is causing this, and how can I resolve it?

First, are there any clues in event viewer? Secondly have you checked the
cooling fans? When the hang occurs, did you look at the processes in task
manager?
