Sorry, I never saw these posts, didn't get any notification that there was a
response.

After installing EW, my FP software doesn't open at all on my machine. I
get a MS message "MS Frontpage application file has encountered a problem and
needs to close".

I will try FP Clean. Thanks.

J

Jennifer

Thank you for the info and for being patient. Some of us are getting pretty
confused and it seems one problem leads to another. And there's very little
time left before 1&1 pulls the FP extensions!

J

Jennifer

OK, I still cannot even open my Frontpage software since installing EW. As
soon as it tries to come up I get the same error message "Frontpage
Application file has encountered a problem, needs to close". I appreciate
everyone's input so far but I'm still desperate. This is what I've tried so
far, to no avail.

1. I ran the FP cleaner.
2. I ran a "repair". Got a message that MS extensions were unable to access
configuration for MS Personal Web Server.
3. I did a re-install. Got the same message about the MS extensions unable
.....
4. I un-installed and re-installed. Got same message about the MS extensions.

I've re-booted in between, etc.

I have been running Frontpage 2000; my disk is SR-1. I've tried to find a
download for Frontpage 2000 on the MS site to try that, or the most recent
version, in case my installation disk is corrupted. All I can find is
patches and updates for Office 2000 (that may include Frontpage). I'm afraid
to try that since I have Office 2003 on my computer, don't want to overwrite
that with an old version of Office.

Does anyone have a suggestion? Or know where I can find the latest download
for Frontpage 2000 to try? I just NEED to get at my webs in FP for a while
before I make the transition to EW.

There is no download for FP 2000. It's out of life and support.
What OS are you using? WinXP? Windows Vista?

One of your problems is reference to the Personal Web Server. It is not
supported on those O/S. Make sure you *uninstall* it and FP 2000.

Then, reinstall FP 2000 using a custom install, and do not install a PWS.
If you are using WinXP Pro, it has a web server (IIS) and extensions. If
you are using Home, it does not. You'll need to use disk based webs with FP
2000.

Tom, I'm using XP Pro, have for 2-3 years or so. I've used FP for about 7
years without any problems until now, have done many websites.

But now I'm feeling like a total dummy. I've never before heard of a
Personal Web Server, have no idea what it is, where it came from or how to
find it to un-install! It's not in my list of Add/Remove Programs in Control
Panel. Is it possible it was installed when I installed EW??? If so, is it
going to mess up EW if I uninstall it?

PWS is on the 2000 CD and you should not install it on XP Pro as it uses IIS
with FrontPage unless you're using disk-based webs, in which case you'd not
need the server.

EW does not use (nor install) PWS, but it can use IIS although it comes with
it's own mini-server built in (Cassini I think its called). PWS and IIS were
probably battling for control.

Look in Start / Programs / Microsoft Personal Web Server Setup - the
uninstall may be there
or try your FrontPage 2000 CD

I didn't find PWS under Start/Programs either. It also is not an option for
custom FP 2000 installation. After hours of researching on MS, I found
instructions to manually uninstall Personal Web Server 2.0. I did a search
of my hard drive and found 7 of the 9 msweb*.* files and deleted them. I
also searched for pws*.* files (from PWS 4.0), found 4 of them, deleted them.
I have no idea where they came from although I've had older versions of
Windows before I went to XP Pro.

None of these msw or pws files are on the FP 2000 disc. I looked and tried
to open some files on the disc, found 2 that said they couldn't open,
"fp30wel.dll not found". I don't know if that means anything.

Bottom line, I still am getting the very same error messages when I try to
install FP 2000, and when I try to open it. Any other ideas?

Usually you'd uninstall a program not just delete files...not sure what will
happen now.

IIRC when you install FP 2000 you'll have the option of (not) installing
PWS...probably under Custom Install - it's been a long time since I've even
seen FP 2000 so sorry if I can't be more precise.

What you may have to do is get a registry cleaner (I believe "regclean"
is freeware, although I use "RegCure") in order to delete the registry
entries that were associated with those files you deleted.

I don't think PWS is supplied with FP2000. But if Jennifer has used an
earlier operating system (Win98?) then PWS could be a carryover from
there. The file fp30wel.dll is related to FP98 or FP98 extensions.

In reply to your reply and 2 subsequent replies ...

PWS is not installed on my computer, thus can't uninstall.
PWS is NOT included on the FP 2000 disk, not an option under custom install.
Apparently I have residual files from PWS on my system, which is why I
deleted all that I found per MS instructions for a "manual uninstall". I
have previously had Win ME on my system, Win 98 before that but system was
totally re-built since then ... but maybe old residual files were never
removed. At any rate, deleting these files didn't solve the problem.

Ron mentioned that the file that couldn't be found "fp30wel.dll" is related
to FP98 extensions. I likely had Win98 on my system when I first installed
FP 2000. Should I find that file somewhere and put on my system? If so,
find where? Put where?

Another response mentioned doing a registry clean. Is that a SAFE move?
I'm a bit paranoid about messing with registry. Do any of you have more
recommendations for a free registry cleaner?

Sorry to drag this out so long but this problem is really messing me up
trying to convert my webs from FP 2000 to EW. Thanks to all for help.

You're right,,, it was fp98. And sounds like she's upgraded the puter
several times so there could be lots of residual junque there.

|I don't think PWS is supplied with FP2000. But if Jennifer has used an
| earlier operating system (Win98?) then PWS could be a carryover from
| there. The file fp30wel.dll is related to FP98 or FP98 extensions.

So you went from W98, then ME, then XP on this machine?
- it's probably time for a clean install of XP (wipe the drive)...but you'd
be off on a couple of day tangental adventure.

I've used CCleaner's (previously named CrapCleaner) registry cleaner without
any problems (your mileage may vary). Manually editing the registry; if
you're not comfortable doing it...DON'T.

fp30wel.dll is available for download on the net, whether the sources are
reliable or whether it will help...dunno.

| In reply to your reply and 2 subsequent replies ...
|
| PWS is not installed on my computer, thus can't uninstall.
| PWS is NOT included on the FP 2000 disk, not an option under custom
install.
|
| Ron mentioned that the file that couldn't be found "fp30wel.dll" is
related
| to FP98 extensions. I likely had Win98 on my system when I first
installed
|
|

Well, I got a complete new system, new hard drive, cards, etc. when I
upgraded to XP, but I really don't know how/what the PC staff who built this
system transferred from my old drive other than data files. Could be a lot
of residual. I'll keep that suggestion in mind for later ...

If I get CClean, is there a default clean that is safe? I wouldn't know how
to select options in an advanced clean.

Thanks for your continuing input.

|
| PWS is NOT included on the FP 2000 disk, not an option under custom
install.
|
| Ron mentioned that the file that couldn't be found "fp30wel.dll" is
related
| to FP98 extensions. I likely had Win98 on my system when I first
installed
|
|

I've never had CCleaner mess anything up, but there's an automatic backup
choice when you select the clean registry option...just take note of where
you save the backup to.

There's a good chance this will do nothing to solve your problem though -
but it will get junk out of registry- and it's worth a try.

Another response mentioned doing a registry clean. Is that a SAFE move?

For someone with your professed level of expertise, a *manual* editing
would not be "safe."

A program that looks for missing connections, "empty" registry keys,
program entries that have no program associated is safe.

If you don't like Regclean (free) or the payware Regcure, try Registry
Booster. It makes a backup before it removes anything.

Registry Booster offers a free scan of your computer. It won't repair
anything, you have to buy the program; but you will get an idea of what
needs to be fixed.

But given your circumstances, I believe the recommendation to wipe your
hard drive and start again might be warranted in this case. It will be
a real pain; but it also may fix problems you didn't know you had.

You may want a computer tech to do this for you--back up your data, and
then wipe your hard disk and reinstall XP. Then reinstall your programs
and your data.
