How to upgrade?

R

Roland

Steve and Kathleen: I posted a thankyou for my 3/18 question.
I use FP2003 and have been using FP for about 9 years, simply by trial and
error. But I cringe at how easy it is to make errors with FP.
I finally after years of searching, found someone local who could tutor me
to do more with FP to make my websites look and flow better. She also knows
Expression Web. She's coming back this evening.

From the MS description, I had no idea which new program to upgrade to, if
any. She says EW does work better and I'd like it. BUT, then she asked what
my other software is. I have Win XP Pro and Office 2003. She says I need FP
and Office 2003 OR EW and Office 2007, but not mixed. ???????? Will either
program work with either version of Office, or not??? I also use Word Art; I
think I read EW doesn't recognize Word Art? Does EW have an alternative?
Any other upgrade alternatives for someone who doesn't have time to learn
what he's doing?
Thanks.

1) You can have both FP 2003 and EW installed..they are completely different
programs.

2) You can use Office 2003 or 2007. You don't need Office 2007 for either
program. No problem mixing.

3) Word Art is removed from EW (no replacement) as well as other features.
Word Art is not compatible with browsers other than IE.

You might want to visit the EW newsgroup.

Regarding Word Art - you should not be using it on web pages. Word Art
uses VML graphics that only render in Internet explorer, other browsers
either show a poor quality .gif image or nothing at all. See
http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/vml-graphics.htm for more details.

You can continue to use Word Art if you cut and paste the art into an
image editor, then crop and save as a .jpg image. Then import the .jpg
image into FrontPage/Expression Web and use that instead of the Word
Art.

As long as the images are not photographs and are limited colors, gif is
okay.

Expanding Tom's answer, if the Word Art is block colours then a .gif
will be OK. A .gif is limited to 256 colours, whereas a .jpg is limited
to the colour setting of the PC, often millions of colours.

Most Word Art I have seen use colour gradients, which require a .jpg to
be seen at their best.

Thanks, Ron and Tom. Yes, I use jpegs for gradients and gifs where the colors
are solid & simple.
