I would like to apply similar features as used for
alternate text but to an imgage instead, e.g. like
scrolling text or a flying window. How to get an image to
appear on the home page for a few seconds and then
dissolve into the background. could one use A Hover
button or banner ad or another web component?

Don't use JAVA applets (Hover buttons etc.) because IE doesn't support them.
Find other ways. Look at www.dynamicdrive.com for some javascripts.
