Frontpage FTP problem (duplicate files)

Hi everyone,

I need someones help in this.

Before when I published our site in the frontpage FTP everything was going fine. Then two days ago I started seeing something wired.

When I go o publish our site in the Frontpage FTP it shows that the file where we are hosting the site has duplicate of the same file name and also some of the subfolders are showing missing. I have tired to reinstall frontpage but that didn't work. I used a third party FTP to see if these file and folders are doing this wired staff, but everything seems to be fine on the hosting server.

Then I went in the frontpage FTP and tired to delete the duplicate files, then what happend is all the files got deleted. So I have to publish them again and then it shows duplicate files again. For the missing folders when I tired to publish them again it tells me that they already exist but the funny thing is I can't see them.

Can someone tell me if I have a bug or what I need to do in order to resolve this issue.

Thanx alot for your help.

Best R.

Howdy.

Are these "duplicate" files by any chance in _vti_cnf
subfolders? If so, these are actually text files where
FrontPage keeps tracks of the information it needs for a
given file. For example, the FrontPage information for a
picture file named tiger.gif would reside in a small text
file named _vti_cnf/tiger.gif.

If your remote site doesn't have the FrontPage server
extensions installed, it has no use for these files.
Unfortunately, excluding them in a 3rd-party FTP program
is a nuisance. Fortunately, if you do your FTP publishing
in FrontPage, FrontPage will exclude them for you.

The issue with "missing" folders that are actually there
usually occurs for folders with names that begin with an
underscore. Some programs (FrontPage included) don't show
these folders unless you set a special switch.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for replying to help me in my current problem.

Actually our site has been running for almost 3 years now with no problem until now. The duplicate files are not in the in _vti_cnf subfolders. The files I am talking about are in the main directory. For example the "index.htm" has a duplicate when I go through the Frontpage FTP and all other files in the same directory as the index.htm file is duplicated. I have checked our site in another compture that has the frontpage installed in it and it looks fine no problem and there are no duplicates also no missing subfolder. So I believe it is the frontpage installed in my computer. I tired reinstalling or used the option for repair, but nothing worked. So I am looking for new suggestions to solve the problem that I am in.

I hope that I have explained more clearly my problem and thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks Jim for replying,

No the files are not in the _vti_cnf subfolders. The files are in the main directory. For example the "index.htm" file is duplicated and all other files in the main directory are duplicated. The missing folder are subfolders. It is true when I try to publish them again it says that they already exist. It looks like the are hide and I just don't know how to make the unhide. I have checked in another computer our website with frontpage FTP and the files look okay and no duplicates or missing subfolders. So I believe it is the frontpage installed in my computer and I have tried to reinstall frontpage and tired the repair option, but nothing worked. I don't have any more ideas on what to do next.

So I thank you in advance for your help and if you have an idea or something for me to try out let me know.

Best R.

With FP Closed, search for and delete *.web (hidden/system) files, and delete the FP temp folder
under Windows Temp folder.

Thanks Thomas for replying,

I closed the FP and searched for *.web but found nothing. I looked under windows temp folder and couldn't find any FP temp folder unless it has a different name that I am not familiar with. Please give me more directions.

Thanx alot for your help

I am running FP 2002

what do you mean by server system hidden.

What I have done is in explorer I have went to Tools and then option and checked selected to view hidden files so that when I search would be able to locate the file you are asking me to find. But I couldn't find the file.

Thanks for the help

I meant System/Hidden, and this is set under the Windows Search (Find Files) function, not My
Computer or Windows Explorer.

Download FP Cleaner from http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm
With FrontPage closed, run the routines that delete the cache files and
temporary files.

For information, the cache files are located at
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

And the temporary files are at (for FP2003)
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir

Copy these paths into the Windows explorer address bar.
