FrontPage File Conversion

Terry N

Our company website was created in FrontPage. We do not have FP but need to
edit our site. How can we convert FP files to standard HTML for use by
DreamWeaver or some other TEXT/HTML editor?

Thanks!

It is already standard HTML... However there is no auto conversion for features / functions that
require the FP extensions, such as forms, navigation, which will have to be redone manually.

You are not opening the pages, you are opening the meta data files which
is data ABOUT the pages. If you are moving to Dreamweaver then all
_vti* folders and their contents can be ignored - these are only used
by FrontPage, Expression Web and the FrontPage extensions.

If, and only if, you never intend to use FrontPage, Expression Web or
the extensions again, remove the extensions from the server, including
all meta data, and delete the _vti* folders from your local copy of the
website. The website itself will not be affected unless you are using
components that use the extensions or meta data.

Before touching the website with Dreamweaver or deleting any folders,
make sure your website is not using any components that rely on the
extensions - look for <!--webbot in the HTML markup, and see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281532/

Just a comment. I have used Frontpage since 97' exclusively on websites that
I have been maintaning. I would be curious as for the reason for the software
move? Although Dreamweaver is an excellent package. Just curious, Thanks!

Thomas- I have been openeing the .HTML files with 'Notepad' and 'CoffeeCup'.

Sid- I am familiar with 'DreamWeaver' but not 'FrontPage' (do not even own
FP and since it's been discontinued, doesn't make sense to buy & learn it
now).

Ronx- Apparently, I am looking at the wrong files then. These were the only
..HTML files I could find.
Where does FP store the .HTML web pages, how does FP organize the files of a
web site?
(I'm used to all the .HTML files in the root dir. including additional
folders for 'images', 'PDFs',
'scripts', etc.)

PS: I used FileZilla to download the files from our ISP server.

Thanks everyone for your help!

FrontPage organises files the same way as most other web editing
programs - a root folder containing pages and images, with other folders
containing the same. In addition, there are folders with names starting
_vti that contain meta data files similar to the file you opened. In
_vti_cnf folders the meta data files will have the same names as files
in the parent folder - this includes images, so there will be text files
with .jpg extensions. The meta data can be ignored.

See http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/FP-Folders.htm for details.

The "How files are organised in FrontPage" table
(http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/FP-Folders.htm) was extremely helpful
and answers my original need. Now that I know how the files of a FrontPage
website are organized, it appearss that I didn't get all the files when I
downloaded.

Thanks all for your concern and this valuable info.
