Frontpage Dynamic Web Templates Lose Links When Files Moved

I have a site that uses Frontpage 2003 Dynamic Web Templates. Each of
the Templates includes links to some graphics files.

When working with the local file-based web site, I MOVED the graphics
files to a subfolder (/images). Frontpage did this, giving notice that
it is "renaming file xxxx to /images/xxxx". I ASSUMED that it was
searching the site for links to the graphics files and re-setting the
links.

Well, Frontpage DID re-set the links for each of the affected .html
pages, but it DID NOT re-set the links in any of the Template files.
Viewing the Templates in Frontpage reveals that the graphics are
missing from each Template. Any further pages created using the
Dynamic Web Templates are missing the graphics.

What am I missing? Why won't Frontpage change the file links within
the Dynamic Web Templates? Do I have to manually re-set all the file
links in the Templates when a linked file is moved?

Thanks, Myron

Did you open the DWT and make a change, then save it and let FP update all pages using the DWT?

First, there are around ten DWTs that I'm dealing with and around 100
..htm pages that are associated with the various DWTs. All of the DWTs
use these same graphics files in their banners. The graphics files are
part of the non-editable regions of all the DWTs.

I tried moving the graphics files with one of the DWTs open. When I
move the graphic files (inside of Frontpage 2003), there isn't even an
OPTION to save the DWT. As far as Frontpage is concerned, the DWT
didn't change. Frontpage DID change ALL the .htm files that were
affected by the change.

Whether the DWT is open or closed made no difference. Frontpage will
NOT change the graphics file links within the DWT. Frontpage DOES
change all the affected .htm files. So you end up with a web site that
looks great...but the .dwt Templates are missing the relocated files.
So next time you use the .dwt, you will create an .htm file that has
bad links and missing graphics.

Again, this was all done working on a local disk-based web using
Frontpage 2003. The result was then published to a Windows 2003
Server. All of the pre-existing .htm pages look OK. But any NEW pages
that are generated are missing the graphics files.

So, basically, it appears that Frontpage does not change links in .dwt
pages when files are moved within Frontpage. I even tried
"recalculating links" after the file moves to no avail. If you move a
file that is referenced in a non-editable region of a DWT, you have to
manually change the link in the DWT. Frontpage won't do it for you.

Also, I have found that if you RENAME a file (without changing its
location) Frontpage WILL change any DWTs that are OPEN during the
renaming. However, Frontpage will NOT change any DWTs that are not
open.

Thanks, Myron

Ok, then do a search and replace in HTML/Code View to correct the path in just the DWTs.

Thomas,

Thanks for your help and for your suggestion. That's one that I didn't
think of and should (hopefully) fix the other problem that I was
running into:

If you manually edit the (now incorrect) links to the graphics files,
all the picture settings (size, etc.) are lost. Using a code
search/replace should (I hope) keep the picture settings.

Thanks, Myron
