frontpage backups taking up host space

I am having a problem with uploading when I add new pages or change
pages...FrontPage creates backup files for each new upload. These are
taking up space on the server. How do I delete these extra backups?
The web host says if they do it, on the next upload FrontPage will put
them back on. There must be a way to stop the extra backups from my
end. The ideal situation would be if I could make FrontPage , on
uploading, delete the old backups when a current backup is created.

Any suggestions?

FrontPage does not create backups. What you are looking at (in
_vti_cnf folders) are the extensions meta data, which is essential for
the correct operation of FrontPage and the extensions. If your site
has the extensions installed DO NOT remove these files.
If your site does not have the extensions, do not upload them.
FrontPage never publishes these folders/files - with extensions they
are created on the server during the publishing process, without
extensions FP FTP publishing will ignore them.

Adding to Ron's comments: those files are relatively small in size, unless
the host is doing something to increase them in order to use more web space.
I've heard of it being done.

Thank you both very much for your help. You were right, it was not
because of backup files, and from knowing what the problem was NOT, I
was able to find the actual problem.

At my first upload, I made a mistake in the name of the website. As a
result, I had 2 websites on the server. I thought I had fixed the
first, incorrect, website by uploading OVER it. I did not upload over
it , I simply uploaded another (correctly named) website. The first,
incorrect, website has been deleted (by a wonderful web host) and I now
have an extra 70mb . Woohoo!

Thanks again for helping to clear the cobwebs!
Kind regards
Janelle
